Sanwo-Olu to unveil 10 new ferries

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will unveil 10 ferries to enhance transportation in his bid to boost the socioeconomic development of the state.

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, disclosed this on Friday at the Joint Citizens Media Engagement Forum, in Lagos.

According to him, the unveiling of the 10 ferries will take the total number of ferries to 25 the governor has unveiled so far.

Omotosho said the “ferries are very good compared to any ferry that you can find anywhere in the world; these ferries were built by our young engineers.

“They are ferries that do not just stand as means of transportation but also as a symbol of what is possible in Nigeria.”

The commissioner praised media organisations in the state for giving necessary feedback to the citizens and the state government.

On tourism, he said that the state government was taking steps towards ensuring that ‘Detty December’ would get bigger and better.

“You have seen how things went in Lagos during the Yuletide. Today, Lagos is an example of how the world should celebrate the end of the year,.

“From October, up to early January, there was one festivity or the other in Lagos. Everybody has been talking about Detty December,” he said.

Omotosho added that while Sanwo-Olu has inaugurated about 35 roads and five bridges across the state, Lagosians should expect more from the government.

Tinubu hails Finland for Simon Ekpa’s arrest

President Bola Tinubu has commended the Finnish government for its decisive intervention in the arrest and detention of Simon Ekpa, describing it as a crucial step towards preserving Nigeria’s unity and peaceful coexistence.

Tinubu stated this on Friday in Abuja while receiving Letters of Credence from the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Sanna Selin, at the State House.

The President expressed gratitude to Finland for its cooperation in safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic values and addressing actions that could cause division among citizens.

This was contained in a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday.

“I must thank you for your record on safeguarding human rights in our country with the trial of Simon Ekpa. Nigeria is indivisible. We have been through turbulent times, and we don’t want to promote terrorism,” Tinubu stated.

Reiterating his administration’s commitment to fostering unity and stability, Tinubu stressed that Nigeria requires cohesion to move forward.

“I am a child born into activism, but not divisiveness. We need cohesion and cooperation to bring about development. Our watchword is stability and cohesion to move the country forward,” he added.

The President also highlighted the importance of adhering to the rule of law in upholding democratic principles.

“The rule of law safeguards our democratic credentials, morals, and values. We must respect the rule of law,” he said.

The Finnish Ambassador, Ms. Selin, thanked the Nigerian government for its collaboration and praised President Tinubu’s ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the nation’s economy.

She noted that the measures, though challenging, are necessary for Nigeria’s growth.

“Simon Ekpa has been hindering bilateral relations. The cooperation
between our two countries is going very well now, and the National Security Adviser has been providing all the evidence,” Ms. Selin remarked.

She further commended Tinubu’s boldness in implementing reforms, stating, “Even though it is painful, it is the only way Nigeria can progress. It is essential for the country.”

Tinubu also used the occasion to discuss Nigeria’s bilateral relationship with Finland, expressing optimism about opportunities in information and communications technology, agriculture, and education.

He praised Finland’s support for humanitarian efforts in the North East and called for further cooperation.

Earlier during the event, Tinubu also received Letters of Credence from the Ambassador of the European Union, Gautier Mignot, and the Ambassador of Algeria, Hocine Mezoued.

He called for stronger ties with the EU, urging collaboration to enhance trade, digitalisation, and automation in service delivery.

The President also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional cooperation during his meeting with the Algerian Ambassador, citing the Trans-Saharan African Gas Pipeline project as a vital initiative for Africa’s economic development.

“We need to lift one another in Africa, and we will be stronger together. We must lift Africa together,” Tinubu said.

In response, the Algerian Ambassador commended Nigeria’s leadership role on the continent, pledging Algeria’s support for collaborative development projects.

The series of diplomatic engagements on Friday underscored Tinubu’s resolve to strengthen Nigeria’s international relations while ensuring peace, stability, and economic growth within the country.

Edo confirms Lassa fever outbreak, activates emergency response measures

The Edo State Government on Friday said there is a new outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state and called on the people to report any suspected case.

The state Commissioner for Health, Cyril Oshiomhole, stated this at a press conference in Benin, the state capital.

He also urged improvement in hygienic conditions to reduce the presence of rodents, particularly long-mouthed rats, which are the major carriers.

While announcing the outbreak, Oshiomhole disclosed that the government has activated the Incident Management Structure and appointed Ekaete Tobi of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital as the State Lassa Fever Incident Manager for the 2025 outbreak response.

He said, “There is a new outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state and the government is calling on the people to report any suspected case.

“There should also be an improvement of hygienic conditions to reduce the presence of rodents, particularly long-mouthed rats, which are the major carriers.

“Additionally, all pillar leads and teams, including Surveillance, Laboratory, Logistics, Vector Control, Infection Prevention and Control, Risk Communication, and Case Management, are hereby activated. I appointed Dr. Osahogie Edeawe as Case Manager.”

He said early detection and treatment significantly improve outcomes and urged people to be vigilant.

He added, “This declaration follows the confirmation of several cases of Lassa Fever in the state through laboratory testing.

“The outbreak poses a significant public health concern due to its potential for rapid transmission and severe outcomes if not effectively managed.

“To contain this outbreak, the State Public Health Emergencies Response Management Team has activated its emergency response mechanisms.”

He said measures have been activated to contain the spread of the disease, noting that educating the public is key in combating the disease.

He listed some measures to combat the disease as “strengthening disease surveillance systems to promptly identify and report cases; scaling up treatment capacity at designated centers for the management of confirmed cases; educating the public on preventive measures, such as proper hygiene, rodent control, and safe food storage practices; equipping healthcare workers with adequate protective gear and training on Lassa Fever management protocols and partnering with national and international health organizations for technical support, resources, and supplies.”

He added, “Lassa Fever is one of the viral hemorrhagic diseases endemic to Edo State, and its recurrence remains a concern. In 2024, the state recorded 3,270 suspected cases, of which 292 were confirmed positive, with 41 deaths, representing a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 14.0%.

“This marked an improvement from the 2023 outbreak, where 3,764 suspected cases and 372 confirmed cases resulted in 65 deaths (CFR of 17.595). Our goal remains to achieve a single-digit or zero CFR.

“This progress in 2024 was made possible through the dedication of state officials, the one health team, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, partners, the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and other stakeholders.”

EPL: Van Nistelrooy unfazed by Leicester’s slump, backs players to rebound

Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy insists he is not worried about being sacked as he works to end a seven-game losing streak that has left the club in the Premier League relegation zone.

Van Nistelrooy earned four points from his first two games in charge after replacing Steve Cooper at the King Power Stadium in early December.

However, his strong start quickly unravelled, and the Foxes now sit second from bottom in the league table, two points away from safety ahead of their match against Tottenham on Sunday.

The Dutchman, a former star striker for Manchester United and Real Madrid, said: “I am focused on getting this team out of the situation we’re in, and that is my only concern.

“Every day, I work with the players and everyone at Leicester to get the best out of this squad.

“In difficult times, you need to be tough, strong, and show character. You must persist, work hard, and remain committed.

“I feel we are united and committed as a group. That spirit is visible on the pitch. Yes, we’ve been losing, but I can see a team with spirit and fight. We’ll keep going, and this run will end.”

Leicester have only signed French defender Woyo Coulibaly during the current transfer window. Van Nistelrooy confirmed that there was “no news” on further additions so far.

The former Manchester United striker, who also had a brief spell as the club’s interim manager earlier this season, said Leicester are still exploring ways to strengthen the team.

“I believe in the players I have now, but we are also looking at options to strengthen the squad,” he said.

“It’s clear what the possibilities are and what they’re not. We are still in that process, but at the moment, there’s no news.”

FG eyes vulnerable citizens with new NIN card

The National Identity Management Commission has said that the new National Identification Number card will support government-to-people services and offer multiple functionalities to improve access to government interventions.

Speaking on the initiative during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Dr Peter Iwegbu, Director of Card Management Services at NIMC, said the card is designed to ensure the effective delivery of government services, particularly to vulnerable Nigerians.

He noted that the card would address challenges in identifying beneficiaries of government interventions, providing a secure and verifiable platform for accessing such services.

He stated, “The second programme is addressing the need for government services being delivered. There have been challenges in identifying the people who participate in government interventions.

“The government-to-people card addresses this need for the government, its agencies, and even the private sector to identify those provided with such services in a secure and verifiable manner. This is on the back of the national identification number card.”

Iwegbu further explained that the initiative aligns with NIMC’s mandate to enrol Nigerians and issue them a general-purpose card.

He added that the new card programmes are aimed at addressing social and economic issues by integrating payment functionality with identity as a foundation.

“The programmes will provide support to Nigerians,” he said. “It is a three-in-one card, which means it gives access to government services, serves as a form of identification, and facilitates financial transactions.”

He emphasised that the card would enhance security by enabling authorities to track fraudulent activities.

He noted that the government-to-people card would be personalised to each Ministry, Department, and Agency that adopts its usage and would be programme-driven.

According to him, the initiative is targeted at ensuring that government services and initiatives are delivered effectively to vulnerable groups across the country.

The NIMC, in collaboration with the Nigeria Interbank Settlement Systems, AfriGO, Data Mining Company, and other stakeholders, is set to roll out digital cards equipped with multiple wallets to drive financial inclusion and improve Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product.

These cards will allow Nigerians to access government services across MDAs while also serving as a platform for students to secure government loans.

Farmers registered under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security have already adopted the cards for government services, including agricultural loans, seedlings, and other inputs aimed at boosting food production and security.

The Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, highlighted that the biometric-enabled cards align with the eight-point agenda of President Bola Tinubu and are designed to address the socio-economic needs of Nigerians.

Speaking at the NIMC headquarters in Abuja, Coker-Odusote explained that the cards would be available to citizens both within and outside the country and to legitimate residents, enabling them to perform various transactions such as paying utility bills, accessing transportation services, and shopping.

“The cards can be used offline and online, providing services for unbanked citizens in rural areas and supporting businesses in need of government aid. Nigerians will no longer require intermediaries to access government services and support,” she said.

Coker-Odusote assured that the cards are equipped with advanced security features, making them tamper-proof and preventing ghost beneficiaries from accessing government programmes.

The Managing Director of AfriGO, Ebehijie Momoh, described the card as a groundbreaking domestic solution that would transform Nigeria’s economy.

“The digital card is a domestic solution to drive financial inclusion and provide cost-effectiveness and transparency within the system. It ensures data sovereignty and autonomy, which are critical for economic growth,” she said.

Momoh also noted that the card would support the government’s cashless policy by ensuring that financial transactions remain within the domestic economy.

The PUNCH can confirm that the new NIN card is expected to be launched next week.

CCD Urges Nationwide Support For Implementation Of Disability Rights Act

As Nigeria marked the sixth anniversary of the passage of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has called on all Nigerians, government, civil society, the private sector, and the general public to actively support the implementation of the Act.

The Centre urged Nigerians to ensure that persons with disabilities are not left behind, but are given the opportunity to participate in every aspect of life, and their rights protected and respected.

Godwin Unumeri, Acting Director of CCD in a statement said that the Centre which led the passage of the Act, remains committed to raising public awareness and advocating for the inclusion of persons with disabilities across all sectors.

He said that a series of events aimed at furthering advancement of disability rights have been planned.

“The aim of this commemoration is to increase public awareness of the National Disability Act and its provisions, to celebrate the progress made in the last six years, and to call for further action in accelerating its implementation.

“We also seek to engage all relevant stakeholders, including the government, civil society, and the private sector, in advancing inclusive policies and practices that support PWDs. This includes promoting greater community support for disability inclusion, improving accessibility, and ensuring the active participation of PWDs in decision-making processes.

Unumeri called on the relevant ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs), as well as the private sector and the public to prioritise the implementation and enforcement of the Act, ensuring that persons with disabilities are able to fully participate in society.

“This includes their right to accessible physical structures, inclusive education, employment opportunities, transportation systems, political participation, healthcare services, and safety in all situations of risk, violence, emergencies, and natural disasters among others as enshrined in the Act.

We also urge greater collaboration between the government, private sector, and organisations of persons with disabilities to establish and implement inclusive policies, and to provide training for personnel on disability inclusion.

“Only through these collective efforts can we build a more inclusive Nigeria where every person, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to thrive.

The Centre commended the formation of the Inter-Ministerial Agency Committee on Disability Inclusion, which plays a vital role in ensuring the compliance of all MDAs with the Disability Act.

“This is an important step towards achieving equality for PWDs in Nigeria. We encourage the committee to continue its efforts in enforcing strict accessibility standards and to engage with OPDs in developing policies and practices that meet the needs of persons with disabilities.

“As we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our commitment to promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. We believe that through sustained advocacy, public awareness, and the full enforcement of the Disability Act, Nigeria can become a truly inclusive society for all,” he added.

NYSC swears in 2,000 corps members in Jigawa

The National Youth Service Corps has sworn in 2,000 corps members of the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream II deployed to Jigawa State for their national service.

The swearing-in took place on Friday at the Gen. Yakubu Gowon NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Dutse, the state capital.

NYSC scheme was designed to promote national unity and integration and to provide young graduates with the opportunity to contribute to the development of the country.

In his remark at the event, Governor Umar Namadi, represented by the Commissioner for Basic Education, Dr. Lawan Yunusa, declared the orientation course open.

He urged the corps members to feel at home and enjoy the hospitality of the citizens of the state.

According to Namadi, Jigawa State is rich in cultural heritage, and unique agricultural produce, and has a conducive atmosphere that promotes healthy lifestyle and entrepreneurship.

“You will find our state to be a place where you can grow and develop,” he assured the corps members.

The governor’s representative also called on the corps members to position themselves as positive and dependable agents of transformation and symbols of national integration and rapid socio-economic development.

He emphasised the importance of building bridges of friendship that transcend religion, ethnicity, and bigotry.

“I urge you to promote and champion peaceful coexistence for national unity, as you settle in, and I encourage you to get to know the people and culture of Jigawa State,” he said.

However, the governor assured the corps members that his administration would continue to create an enabling environment for them to maximise their potentials, adding that “We will provide the necessary support to enhance the capacity of the NYSC to deliver on its core mandate.”

Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Jidda Dawut, told the corps members that the scheme has four cardinal programmes designed to engage them towards self-reliance and capacity building for future leadership responsibilities.

Dawut therefore called on the corps members to adhere to camp rules, respect constituted authority, and actively participate in all activities, saying “Your participation and cooperation are crucial to the success of this orientation course.”

“Your are expected to undergo a three-week orientation course, which will equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge for their national service,” the coordinator explained to the corps members.

Bandits kill 27-year-old, abduct five in Kaduna

Bandits have reportedly killed a 27-year-old, Piti Ezekiel, and abducted five persons in Akansan Garmadi, Rumaya Community, Kwassam ward in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The National Secretary, of Kauru Local Government Area CDAs Forum, Danbaba Katuka disclosed this on Friday in a telephone interview with PUNCH Online.

According to him, the victims abducted were identified as; Afiniki Baban Gida, age 46 years, Afiniki Timothy, age 41years, Talatu Timothy, age 40 years, Manayi Abu, age 36 years and Richard Dalhatu, age 42 years while one Mr. Timothy Daure, 48-years, a traditional title holder in Kumana Chiefdom survived with a gunshots injury.

He explained that the bandits invaded the village on Thursday at about 10:30 pm, taking vantage position, shooting sporadically, killing Piti Ezekiel, and whisking five people.

PUNCH reports that Kauru Local Government Area had, in recent times, become the hotbed of insecurity crippling the economic activities of the locals, with many households displaced.

“This is the first time our community has been attacked, causing nightmare to our people, the Government must act fast before these terrorists sacked the whole of Kauru communities.

“It has been one form of attack, from different communities, and nothing much is been done from the side of the Government to curtail the activities of these criminals.

“There’s a need for strong military operations to flush out these bandits in their camps,” Katuka stated.

Many locals in Kauru communities have been deserted because of the activities of these bandits, with many residents abandoning their farm produce for fear of being attacked or kidnapped.

” Communities are ready to give all the necessary support that will help address the security challenges in Kauru communities,” Katuka added.

The Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mansir Hassan, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.

#EndBadGovernance: Police, NHRC disagree over arrest, prosecution of minors

The Nigerian Police and National Human Rights Commission on Friday were engaged in à heated debate over the legality of jailing minors arrested at protest grounds for felony and treasonable offences.

The debate took place at the public presentation of a research report titled ‘Beyond the Protests: An Explanatory Study of the #EndBadGovernance protest in Nigeria’ organised by Kimpact Development Initiative in Abuja.

In August last year, Nigeria witnessed widespread demonstrations under the #EndBadGovernance movement, driven by public dissatisfaction to protest the economic hardships and governance issues ravaging the country.

The demonstrations, however, escalated, leading to the arrest of 76 individuals, including 30 minors, who were charged with offences such as treason and inciting a military coup.

The Inspector General of Police had arraigned them on 10 counts bordering on treason, intent to destabilise Nigeria and inciting to mutiny by calling on the military to take over the government from President Bola Tinubu, among others.

However, the President was compelled to grant them pardons following the outrage that trailed their continued detention.

Reacting on Friday, NHRC Executive Secretary, Anthony Ojukwu, argued that the manner the police went about prosecuting the kids without due process was unprofessional.

Ojukwu was represented by the commission’s Head of Monitoring, Benedict Agu.

He said, “It is true the law says no child below seven is liable for prosecution. But as a human rights advocate, we disagree with the police with regard to how those minors were treated. We were among the first few people to interview these children when they were remanded.

“The challenge we had was trying to know the rationale behind bringing up and charging these children for treason. As we all saw, some of them even collapsed in the courtroom.

“So what should be the basis for a mature officer of the law to say that a child who raises another country’s flag is guilty of treason? After all, the same law says there should be a particular due process that should be followed. Why didn’t they follow it?”

But the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, noted that the police were not against peaceful protest but causing violence and any act aimed at bringing down the government of the day was treason.

The police spokesman further argued that the suspects were teenagers and not some seven-year-olds as being peddled on social media.

Adejobi was also represented at the event by his deputy, CSP Victor Isuku.

He said, “As of today, the Nigerian Police recognises protests based on a court judgment. If you check online and look at our press releases during the last #EndBadGovernance protest, you will realise the police are not against peaceful protests.

“When you are below seven years, you may not be criminally liable. Let us not play to the gallery. We shouldn’t, because of emotion, throw away the baby with the bath water. The same lawyers who came to lobby and pray the government to capitalise on that incident (#EndBadGovernance protest) at that period are the same people manipulating these suspects.

“Is there anybody that is below 12 years among the suspects? So, when you use the word minors, the law is very clear. The procedure for prosecution of minors is spelled out in the Child Rights Act. What we charged for was a serious offence that included treason.”

Similarly, the Executive Director of Enough is Enough Nigeria, Yemi Adamolekun, raised concerns that it has become worrisome to note that minors are now being arrested for venting their frustration.

Adamolekun also frowned at the rise in the number of pro-government rallies, which she claimed are targeted at resisting and shutting down dissenting voices across the country.

Earlier in his address, KDI Executive Director, Bukola Idowu, explained that their study showed protests such as the #EndSARS and #EndBadGovernance have showcased the remarkable power of civic action in shaping the future of our nation.

Idowu explained that the research also delved into the complexities and implications of protests in Nigeria, examining critical dimensions such as regional responses, governance implications, human rights, the rule of law, and the transformative role of social media in amplifying civic action.

“Nigeria has a history of protests dating back to the colonial era. However, recent movements have demonstrated that protests are not merely expressions of dissent but powerful catalysts for social change.

“By exploring the #EndBadGovernance movement, we aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of the factors driving protests and their impact on governance and human rights. This report transcends being a mere research output; it is a clarion call to action,” he stated.

9mobile welcomes NCC’s 50% tariff adjustment, promises improved services

A telecommunications service provider, 9mobile, has applauded the Nigerian Communications Commission for approving a 50 per cent tariff adjustment.

The Chief Executive Officer of 9mobile, Obafemi Banigbe, who commended the NCC in a statement on Friday in Lagos, said that the tariff adjustment was aimed at addressing challenges in the telecommunications sector.

According to Banigbe, the tariff adjustment will enable operators to reinvest in critical infrastructure upgrades and capacity expansion, which has been delayed due to financial constraints.

He said that it would also allow operators to fulfil obligations and capital commitments necessary for future growth.

“Without this adjustment, the industry risked a decline in service quality due to insufficient funding,” Banigbe said

He said that the increase would provide a much-needed boost for 9mobile’s ongoing business transformation, including modernising network infrastructure, expanding coverage, and improving digital platforms.

“This decision enables us to replace outdated equipment, expand our network to underserved areas, and enhance the overall customer experience,” he said.

Banigbe said that the tariff adjustment was a strategic measure to bridge the funding gap exacerbated by rising operational expenses, many of which were denominated in foreign currency.

He said that the company remained committed to investing in infrastructure that would deliver reliable and innovative services to its customers.

“Our focus remains on empowering Nigerians through connectivity, expanding access, and supporting the nation’s vision of becoming a leading digital economy in Africa,” he said.

He said that the telecoms industry had previously advocated for a substantial tariff review to combat surging operational costs, driven by inflation, skyrocketing energy prices, and a currency devaluation exceeding 300 per cent.

“The industry’s initial request called for a larger increase of up to 100 per cent.

“But the NCC’s approval of a 50 per cent adjustment represents a balanced approach to safeguarding affordability for consumers while addressing industry sustainability concerns,” he said.

He said that 9mobile was poised to further strengthen its reputation as a customer-centric, quality-focused service provider, ensuring that Nigerians remain connected and empowered in an increasingly digital world.

While appreciating Prince Tajudeen Olusi for organizing the event, Sanwo-Olu noted that the event serves as an opportunity to offer prayers and Sadaqat in memory of the Late Oba Olusi.

According to him, “The essence of today is to offer prayers and Sadaqat in honour of the Late Oba Olusi. It is also very important to train our children, so that they understand the essence of our religion, and then, be of good character wherever they go.

Sheikh Imam Mujitaba Akewushola Giwa, the Alfa Agba of Lagos in his lecture, encouraged privileged Nigerians to extend a helping hand to those in need and serve as positive representatives within their communities, given the current situation of the country.

“Wherever you find yourself, be good to the people around you and let them know you for a good deed because you are alive today, you won’t be alive tomorrow, which is why it is very important for you to do good to others.”

Retired generals behind illegal mining, says Oshiomhole

The Senator representing Edo North in the National Assembly, Adams Oshiomhole, has alleged that retired military generals are behind illegal mining across the country.

Oshiomhole, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, made the allegation on Friday when the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development, Sampson Ekong, submitted his 2025 budget report before the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

The former Governor of Edo State, who is a member of the Appropriations Committee, said the retired military generals are known to him and everyone.

He also recalled a letter he wrote to former President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue of illegal mining when he was in office.

Oshiomhole said, “The ongoing illegal mining across the country is being carried out by retired generals, and we know them. Yes, we know them. Nobody in Africa doesn’t know them. I wrote a letter to former President Muhammadu Buhari on the matter when he was in office.

“This is because a team that I sent to go and conduct the primary somewhere reported back to me the challenge of conducting primary elections in Zamfara because of the illegal miners.

“If we have to fight this menace, we need to deploy the Army even to kill anyone who is involved in the illegal pumping of oil. We should also deploy JTFs, comprising the Army, Police, and Air force, against them.”

Oshiomhole said the country’s efforts to diversify its economy would remain a mirage if President Bola Tinubu’s administration failed to address the issue of illegal mining.

The panel agreed with Oshiomhole’s submissions and urged various security agencies to take up the challenge.

He added: “the investments we are making in education are designed to give you the best opportunities to succeed.

“Stay focused on your studies, shun distractions, and remember that your success is the greatest reward for our collective efforts”.

In his remarks, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Mr Wemi Jones, commended the governor for building on the solid foundation laid by his predecessor, Alh. Yahaya Bello, in prioritising education.

Jones stressed that Ododo’s approval of bursary and scholarships would impact the lives of Kogi students, by transforming their educational journey and empowering them for a brighter future.

Earlier, the Executive Chairman, Kogi State Scholarship Board (KSSB), Mr Afolabi Joseph-Raji, appreciated the governor for the gesture, saying it would significantly alleviate the financial burden on parents and have a profound impact on the lives of Kogi students.

Joseph-Raji encouraged the students who were not verified due to incomplete application, to always endeavour to upload their documents and other mandatory requirements such as BVN and NIN in the subsequent registration.

“The students have started receiving their allowances as scholarship support, and between now and Monday, all the verified students would have received their allowances,” he said.

He stressed that Governor Ododo has given a significant boost to education in Kogi State by approving 1.5 billion naira for the state’s bursary and scholarship board. This investment aims to transform the education sector and provide much-needed support to students.

The KSSB chairman also added that the governor has also increased the bursary allowance for undergraduate students from N10,000 to N30,000. Additionally, Law students from Kogi State will receive a 60 per cent increase in their bursary, bringing it to N300,000.

He further explained that Governor Ododo has approved a significant scholarship fund for students in Kogi State. Specifically, 14 students from higher institutions across the state will each receive N1.7 million, totaling N23.8 million.

“This generous investment in education demonstrates the Governor’s commitment to supporting the academic pursuits of Kogi State students,” Joseph-Raji said.

  Ozigbo’s Wake-Up Call: Anambra’s Moment Of Reckoning

The once-peaceful state of Anambra State has transformed into a theatre of unprecedented violence. In recent months, the state has witnessed a shocking escalation of criminal activities that challenge the very fabric of societal stability. Armed attacks, kidnappings, and targeted assassinations have become disturbingly routine, turning what was once a epitome of commerce and peace into a war zone of uncertainty and fear.

Statistical evidence paints a grim picture. Security reports indicate a 300% increase in violent crimes over the past eighteen months, with local communities living under constant siege. Police stations have been attacked, traditional rulers murdered, and entire communities displaced, creating a humanitarian crisis that threatens to unravel decades of social progress.

Enter Valentine Chineto Ozigbo – a critical stakeholder whose voice carries the weight of corporate leadership, political insight, and deep-rooted community understanding. His recent intervention is not just a statement; it’s a historical inflection point that demands national attention.

To understand Ozigbo’s call, we must examine global precedents of societal restoration. Consider Northern Ireland’s transformation from decades of sectarian violence to peace. The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 wasn’t just a political document but a collective societal commitment to break cycles of revenge and counter-violence.

Similarly, post-apartheid South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission demonstrated how addressing systemic violence requires more than military intervention – it necessitates comprehensive social healing, economic redress, and institutional transformation.

These global examples share a critical commonality with Anambra’s current situation: the recognition that security is not merely a law enforcement challenge but a complex social ecosystem requiring multi-dimensional interventions.

What distinguishes Ozigbo’s intervention is its nuanced understanding of conflict dynamics. Unlike typical political rhetoric that assigns blame, his statement deconstructs the conflict’s structural foundations.

By explicitly rejecting blame allocation to churches, traditional institutions, or specific groups, Ozigbo introduces a radical proposition: collective responsibility supersedes factional narratives. His invocation of the traditional Igbo philosophical principle – “Nwa mmụọ anaghī agba nwa mmadu; nwa mmadu anaghī agba nwa mmụọ” – is not mere cultural ornamentation but a profound call for mutual respect and coexistence.

Ozigbo’s analysis recognizes economic marginalization as a critical conflict driver. By directly addressing youth unemployment and economic desperation, he moves beyond simplistic security paradigms that rely exclusively on punitive measures.

His proposed comprehensive youth empowerment programmes represent a sophisticated understanding that sustainable peace requires positive economic alternatives. This approach mirrors successful global conflict resolution strategies, such as Colombia’s reintegration programmes for former guerrilla fighters or Rwanda’s community reconciliation initiatives.

The proposed state security summit is particularly innovative. It’s not just a meeting but a potential reset mechanism for Anambra’s security architecture. By advocating for greater security agency accountability and local structure strengthening, Ozigbo challenges the existing institutional lethargy.

The “See Something; Say Something” intelligence regime represents a paradigm shift from passive citizenry to active community surveillance. This approach has proven effective in conflict resolution contexts globally, transforming potential victims into active peace agents.

Ozigbo’s intervention is deeply rooted in traditional Igbo conflict resolution mechanisms. Historically, Igbo societies employed sophisticated mediation techniques that prioritized community harmony over individual vindication. The proposed approach echoes these traditional conflict resolution strategies, updating them for contemporary challenges.

As a former corporate leader and political figure, Ozigbo’s intervention transcends typical political grandstanding. His statement is a masterclass in leadership – addressing a critical challenge without seeking personal political capital.

By explicitly stating “This is not about politics—it is about survival,” he challenges the prevailing narrative of political opportunism that has characterized many public interventions.

The documented violations of Nigerian criminal law and international humanitarian standards mentioned by Ozigbo also introduce an important international accountability dimension. This subtle reference potentially opens channels for external mediation and support.

Ozigbo’s recommendations are not abstract philosophies but a practical roadmap: a state-level security summit, enhanced security agency accountability, comprehensive youth empowerment, strengthened local security structures and community-driven intelligence gathering. Each recommendation is strategically interconnected, creating a holistic approach to conflict resolution.

As Anambra stands at this critical juncture, Ozigbo’s call is one that should be heeded – a reminder that societal transformation begins with courageous, honest dialogue and collective commitment.

May his words not just be heard, but catalyze meaningful action.

Court remands woman for spying on husband’s WhatsApp messages

A woman in Eswatini, identified as Dumsile Dludlu has been remanded for allegedly snooping through the WhatsApp account of her husband, Samukeliso Matse, without his consent.

Dludlu’s act is said to contravene Eswatini’s Computer Crime and Cybercrime Act of 2022, which criminalises accessing any part of a computer system without justification in Eswatini, according to the Times of Swaziland on Thursday.

Dludlu was remanded by Principal Magistrate Fikile Nhlabatsi at the Mbabane Magistrates Court.

Her trial will resume on March 10, 2025.

She currently faces up to three years in prison for the digital crime.

Dludlu had pleaded not guilty to the unauthorised access charge as she also admitted to insulting her husband.

She, however, claimed the insults were different from those recorded in the police statement.

“I did insult him, but it wasn’t as severe as what’s in the police statement,” Dludlu told the court, according to a report by iHarare.

The Act aims to help curtail unauthorised access to individuals’ and/or organisation’s electronic devices and the importance of respecting digital boundaries.

Section 3 of the Computer Crime and Cybercrime Act, as quoted by iHarare, read, “A person who intentionally and without lawful excuse accesses or destroys any computer data, for purposes of concealing information necessary for an investigation, commits an offence and is liable, on conviction, to a fine not exceeding E5,000 or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years or both.”

The Chief Executive Officer, Eswatini Communications Commission, Prince Mvilawemphi, cautioned against unauthorised access to one’s partner.

He added that fines could be up to a maximum of E300,000.

“Viewing your love partner’s cellphone is now a crime in Eswatini. The E300,000 fine is the maximum, but a lenient judge may impose a E5,000 fine,” he stated.

In a related case of cybercrime, the Times of Swaziland reported that a woman, Nontsikelelo Gina, was arrested and charged for allegedly intimidating and harassing one Sonto whom she (Gina) suspected of having a love affair with her husband.

Gina had allegedly posted Sonto’s picture on a Facebook page titled ‘Eswatini Ladies House,’ wherein she allegedly insulted and caused her emotional distress.

In another case, a woman, Hlengiwe Mathunjwa, in July 2024, was reportedly arrested for undressing an unnamed woman whom she accused of an alleged relationship with the father of her child.

Mathunjwa then shared a recorded video of the incident on WhatsApp.

INEC Cannot Deny Serving Lawmakers Right To Contest By-Elections – Lawmaker

ABUJA – The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Honourable Adebayo Balogun, has stated that there is no law in Nigeria preventing serving lawmakers or political office holders from contesting by-elections.

Hon. Balogun, who represents Lagos State in the House of Representatives, clarified that serving legislators, both at the state and federal levels, are constitutionally entitled to exercise their right to vote and be voted for in elections, including by-elections.

The Lawmaker who stated this at the weekend in Abuja while chatting with news men on the need for INEC to be truely independent and well funded in order to carry out it’s constitutional functions efficiently and effectively.

Speaking on the sidelines of an electoral stakeholders’ meeting, Hon. Balogun dismissed speculations about any ongoing reforms aimed at disenfranchising serving lawmakers. He emphasized that the ongoing electoral reforms are focused on improving transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in Nigeria’s electoral process, not limiting the political rights of any citizen.

Hon. Balogun, the representative of Ibeju-Lekki Federal Constituency in Lagos State, has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against using financial constraints as an excuse to deny serving parliamentarians their right to participate in by-elections.

Reacting to a recent statement by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, where he urged political parties to field fresh candidates for by-elections into state and federal legislative positions to reduce costs, Hon. Balogun described the remark as a mere suggestion without legal backing in the Electoral Act.

“The INEC Chairman’s proposal, while perhaps made in good faith to address financial concerns, has no legal standing under the current Electoral Act. Serving lawmakers retain their constitutional right to contest in any by-election, and this cannot be curtailed under the pretext of cost-cutting measures,” Hon. Balogun emphasized.

He further called on INEC to prioritize its mandate of conducting free, fair, and inclusive elections, stressing that financial challenges should not compromise the democratic process or the rights of eligible candidates.

“That is not part of our Electoral Act, nor is it under consideration for now to enact a law restricting anyone from contesting elections.

“Personally, if I were to offer advice, I would even recommend utilizing serving members who already have experience in the field. For instance, if the discussion is about replacing a senator, it makes more sense to consider a House of Representatives member who is already familiar with legislative processes and responsibilities.

“It’s unfortunate that this opportunity arose from a by-election. Typically, after every election season or dispensation, many of those contesting for senatorial seats are former members of the House of Representatives.

“Sadly, circumstances such as death or resignation sometimes create these opportunities. However, when they do arise, it is important not to restrict the contest to a select group of individuals. We must ensure the process remains open to everyone.

“This is democracy, and it should reflect the will of the people, let the candidate with the highest number of votes emerge as the winner.

“Democracy is fundamentally about numbers, and it thrives when inclusivity is prioritized. We must not impose restrictions that undermine this principle. While a technocrat might prioritize cost-saving measures, politics goes beyond mere financial considerations.

“Politics is about interests, representation, and respecting the collective will of the people. It is crucial to allow the wishes of the people to prevail, whether at the level of federal constituencies, senatorial districts, or across Nigeria as a whole. Let the people’s voice truly guide our democratic processes.

“As I mentioned earlier, this is not a matter of law but simply advice. It is up to individuals to decide whether to heed the advice, depending on their convenience.

“Advice does not carry the force of law. I also believe no one with a candidate they intend to support would feel good about their candidate being unlawfully disqualified by the INEC Chairman.

“My advice to anyone aspiring for office is to remain committed to their ambition. Ultimately, it is the people in their constituency who have the final say through their votes.

“So, I think no party can put that into their law or has put it in their law for now, and I don’t think it will. It would be unlawful for anybody to be excluded on such a basis. That’s my candid opinion.”

He further disclosed that efforts are being intensified to ensure adequate funding and financial autonomy for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), emphasizing the importance of a well-supported electoral body for credible elections.

The lawmaker also reiterated that every eligible Nigerian has the right to contest elections, regardless of the office they currently hold.

He urged political parties and electorates to consider fielding serving lawmakers for higher electoral positions during general elections and particularly in by-elections.

He emphasized the critical importance of lawmakers leveraging their legislative experience to serve in higher political offices.

He pointed out that past examples, such as Governor Douye Diri and his deputy in Bayelsa State, as well as Senator Monday Okpebholo and his deputy in Edo State, illustrate how lawmakers with legislative backgrounds have successfully transitioned to executive roles and excelled in governance.

He further stated that this trend is particularly relevant in a country like Nigeria, which conducts numerous off-season elections in states such as Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, and Ondo.

According to Hon. Balogun, these elections provide opportunities for serving senators and House of Representatives members to contest for higher positions in their respective states, contributing their wealth of legislative experience to the advancement of governance.

He called for urgent measures to revive the sector and harness its vast economic potential.

On how to reverse the trend, he said that the association is encouraging producers to produce more.

He noted that NCAN has also engaged some development partners to support in setting cashew nursery across the country.

“We have a particular variety that is very popular, which is the Ogbomosho variety and we believe that if we are able to spread this across the nation we will have a uniform product in Nigeria. We have also decided to engage nursery farms in Nigeria to produce more to increase our production in the country,” he added.

Delta Is The Most Financially Stable State In Nigeria, Says Finance Commissioner

ASABA – Delta State Government on Thursday declared that it had not borrowed any money since Governor Sheriff Oborevwori took over governance in the state on May 29, 2023.

The State Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, alongside Commissioner of Public Enlightenment, Mr Charles Aniagwu, while speaking at a press conference in Asaba, stated that contrary to reports by an online news medium, the State Government had not entered into any borrowing relationship with any institution.

The pair mooted that Delta State is the strongest financial state in the country.
He mooted that the state has not entered into any borrowing relationship for the past two years.

According to him, “This state has not entered into any borrowing relationship whatsoever, whether partnership, individual, corporate, bank, local, national or international. We have not borrowed a dime since this administration took effect on the 29th of May, 2023.

“I can state categorically in any forum I found myself, that Delta State remains, in terms of financial terms, the strongest financial state standing in this country.

“I say so with every emphasis because I know the finances of the state, and I say that we are the strongest financial state in Nigeria.

“I can stand this debate at any point in time because I know the balances as I speak to you today. I know the efforts that are being made by this administration.

“We have paid so much in terms of construction, we have made sure that all debts are being paid down as seriously as we can.

“We have also improved in terms of contractual relationships with our contractors. Before now, it is difficult for us to give our contractors advanced payments.

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Public Enlightenment, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, stated that the state has continued to make efforts to defray existing loans from the past.

He mentioned that the state has been able to utilize resources from Federal Allocation alongside internally Generated Revenue to pilot the infrastructural and socioeconomic development of the state.

“We are only using what is available to us that comes in from our entire state. We have not at any time borrowed a penny, and so we were surprised when we saw a report on one of the online platforms suggesting that we are number one in terms of borrowing.

“We do not know where that came from because, as a state, we are on a platform of solid liquidity. We are not only liquid, but we are solidly liquid to be able to deal with the problems that we have and that tells you the management skills of the Oborevwori administration,” he said.

Iranian women arrested for dancing in cemetery, violating dress code

Iranian police arrested two young women after the publication of a video in which they danced in a Tehran cemetery without adhering to the country’s strict dress code, local media reported Friday.

“Not long ago, two people, in the cemetery of martyrs in Tehran, disregarding the sacred site, recorded a video clip with inappropriate clothing and movements that were outside of custom and Sharia” Islamic law, a police statement carried by Tasnim news agency said.

The move “caused strong public protests, especially from the families of the martyrs, and the two were arrested by the police and handed over to judicial authorities,” the statement added.

Under rules imposed after the 1979 Islamic revolution, women must cover their hair and neck and wear loose-fitting clothes in public. They are also not allowed to dance in public places.

But many women have pushed the boundaries by allowing their head coverings to slide back and reveal more hair, especially in Tehran and other major cities.

The trend has been more evident, especially since protests erupted following Mahsa Amini’s death in custody in September 2022. She had been arrested by the morality police for allegedly violating the dress code.

Hundreds of people, including dozens of security personnel, were killed in the subsequent months-long nationwide protests, and thousands of demonstrators were arrested.

Be Confident In Coming Victory, Primate Ayodele Tells Soludo

Says Nnamdi Kanu should embrace FG’s plans to release him

Servant of God, Primate Elijah Ayodele of INRI Spiritual Evangelical Church has urged the Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to be courageous even as his victory in the upcoming governorship election in Anambra State is assured.

He added that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, should accept his conditional release plan by the government.

Primate Ayodele while speaking at the international headquarters of his church at Ejigbo, Lagos State, also advised the governor to remain focused and do more on security as politicians are everywhere looking for victory at all cost.

He also said that he should pay attention to infrastructure, while not neglecting to work on religion and tribe. He stressed that Soludo should listen to all his warnings and work with them.

He advised Soludo not to lose focus because victory is his.

He said “Soludo should focus more on security, as election is coming politicians are everywhere looking for how to grab power.

“Soludo should be confident in his coming victory, and he should listen to all these warnings which will help him because many forces want to fight his government but he should not fear, he will overcome.

“Soludo is better than any other person. If Anambra vote for any other person, they will fail it, they will get it wrong.

“Soludo is the best candidate, he should work on religion, tribes, security and infrastructure. He should introduce homeland security.

“Soludo will perform more than his predecessors, but he should not lose focus, he should remain focused.”

On Nnamdi Kanu, Primate Ayodele warned him not to take his warnings for granted. He advised him to accept the plan by the plan by government to release him conditionally, adding that he will stay in the prison if he doesn’t behave himself.

“If he doesn’t behave himself or put himself together he will stay in that place more than expected. Nnamdi Kanu tell your lawyer to accept unconditional release, if you don’t you will still be there and nothing will happen.

“These people wanted to keep you there as far as you are Nnamdi Kanu.
In as much as you are still Nnamdi Kanu, they see you as a threat, government and political advisers see you as a threat. However if you don’t behave yourself, transferring your case to southeast is not realistic.

If you are not behaving yourself you will stay there as long as this government is in power and nothing will happen,” he added.

Ekiti monarch laments poor telecom services, questions tariff hike

Former Chairman of Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Adebanji Alabi, has cautioned telecommunications service providers against ripping off Nigerians with tariff increases without commensurate good services.

Alabi, who bemoaned the poor services of a mobile telecom services provider, MTN, in his community for upward of about two months, said that “many communities in Nigeria, no doubt, would be agonising under similar poor services”.

The monarch, in a statement by his media adviser, Ajibade Olubunmi, titled, ‘Tariff increase can only be justified by improved services” made available at Ilawe Ekiti on Friday, queried, “What is the justification for tariff increase for poor services?”

Recall that Alabi had on December 29, 2024, wrote a complaint letter to the MTN for intervention to restore good services to his community, saying, “My people are agitated and I have to bring the matter to your notice for your proper intervention and repairs before the agitation gets out of control”.

The monarch frowned at the poor services being rendered to his community by the telecommunication company, which he said prompted him to personally sign two letters on behalf of his community to MTN to rectify the horrible situation.

He stated, “It is quite surprising and most disappointing that the problem still persists up to date”.

The monarch called on the National Communication Commission “to intervene in the poor services being rendered by the MTN to Ilawe Ekiti, the third most populous town in Ekiti State”.

He said, “No one would quarrel with any company who asks for more money when providing fantastic services to customers, but it will be extortion to increase tariffs for poor services”.

The monarch, however, renewed their appeal to MTN to improve its services in his domain and further

Correct Local Govt Anomalies In Bayelsa, Ex-IYC Boss Tells NASS, FG

PORT HARCOURT – A former President of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, Udengs Eradiri, has called on the National Assembly and the Federal Government to correct the local government councils’ anomalies in Bayelsa State.

Eradiri, a former Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Bayelsa, said the state where crude oil was first found in commercial quantity had been suffering injustice since it was created with only eight local government areas by the late former Head of State, Gen. Sanni Abacha.

He wondered why different administrations and various sessions of the National Assembly had carried on over the years as if all was well with Bayelsa’s constitutional composition in terms of the number of local government areas.

Eradiri, a former Commissioner for Youths and later Environment in Bayelsa, called on the National Assembly especially the state’s caucus in the Assembly to correct the abnormality by creating additional 10 local government areas for the state.

Eradiri in a statement in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday, argued that the National Assembly could seize the window provided by the ongoing legislations for the creation of additional states in the country to increase the number of Bayelsa’s local government areas.

Eradiri noted that among all the states in the country, Bayelsa remained the only state with eight local government areas despite its landmass being greater than others like Lagos and Southeastern states that have more local government areas.

He said: “This issue has continued to agitate our minds and it is high time various authorities like the National Assembly and the Federal Government considered it as a matter of urgency.

“There is no justification for Bayelsa State to still have only eight local government areas. The state’s quantum contributions to the country’s economy and it’s large landmass as well as increasing population qualify Bayelsa for 10 additional local government areas.

“We are here by calling on the National Assembly and Bayelsa State caucus in the Assembly to do the needful by capitalising on the ongoing moves to create more states to increase the number of Bayelsa’s local government areas.”

Eradiri appealed to the state Governor, Senator Douye Diri, to constitute a team from within and outside the state to push for the demand in the National Assembly.

Father, son arrested for gunrunning as military kills 79 terrorists

The Defence Headquarters on Friday announced that troops had arrested notorious gunrunner Timothy Yusuf and his son, Timothy Obadiah, during a targeted operation for alleged gunrunning.

According to the DHQ, the duo, known for their involvement in the illegal arms trade, were apprehended during a military operation aimed at disrupting the network of arms dealers supporting terrorists and other criminal groups.

A statement by the outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen Buba Edward, also revealed that troops had killed terrorist commander and arms dealer Abu Mosaje.

He said, “Troops operating in the North Central region achieved a major breakthrough by neutralising Abu Mosaje, a notorious terrorist commander and arms dealer, in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. Additionally, the same troops apprehended Babangida Gora Usman, a wanted kidnap kingpin on the security watchlist, in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

“In a related operation, notorious gunrunner Timothy Yusuf and his son, Timothy Obadiah, were arrested, further crippling the supply chain of illegal arms. Their arrest is expected to weaken the flow of weapons to violent groups across the region.”

Buba also confirmed that the military had intensified its counter-terrorism operations nationwide, achieving remarkable success in neutralising 79 terrorists during the past week.

He added, “The operations targeted terrorist hideouts and collaborators and led to the rescue of 67 kidnapped hostages and the arrest of 224 suspects, including informants and key criminal figures.

“During the week under review, troops across all theatres of operations recorded significant successes. A total of 79 terrorists were neutralised, 224 suspects were arrested, and 67 kidnapped hostages were rescued. In addition, 28 perpetrators of oil theft were arrested, and troops denied oil theft operations valued at over N747 million in the South-South region.

“In the South-South region, troops destroyed 215 crude oil cooking ovens, 26 dugout pits, 29 boats, 62 storage tanks, 20 drums, and 42 illegal refining sites, among other facilities used for illicit activities.

Recovered items included 842,685 litres of stolen crude oil, 12,340 litres of illegally refined AGO, and 200 litres of DPK.”

In the South East, Buba said seven IPOB members, including a suspected kidnapper, were arrested in Enugu State.

He said, “Meanwhile, in the South East, seven members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), were apprehended. Among those arrested were a notorious kidnapper and several informants operating in Enugu North and Ehime Mbano LGAs of Enugu and Imo States, respectively.”

The military’s operations also resulted in the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and ammunition, including 104 assorted firearms, over 1,900 rounds of ammunition, and improvised explosive devices.

“The breakdown is as follows: 53 AK47 rifles, 25 fabricated rifles, one FN rifle, 11 Dane guns, 2 pump-action guns, one fabricated SMG, 4 IEDs, 7 RPG bombs, 30 magazines, 4 IEDs, and 3 locally made butts.

“Other items include: 1,186 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 417 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 49 rounds of 12.7mm ammo, 190 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammo, 12 live cartridges, 3 bandoliers, one Baofeng, 35 motorcycles, and 22 mobile phones,” Buba added.

Ugbekoko Community Demands Clarity In Ongoing Land Dispute

A contentious land dispute between the Ugbekoko community and the Sapele Okpe community, located in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, has intensified following a recent statement from Ugbekoko leaders.

The Ugbekoko community has firmly rejected assertions made by their Sapele Okpe counterparts and accused them of fabricating historical details to justify their claims over Ugbekoko land, purportedly with the support of SEPLAT Energy.

In their official statement, the leaders of Ugbekoko presented historical evidence to substantiate their ownership claims, contending that their community existed prior to the creation of the Okpe-Sobo Forest Reserve.

They state that the land in question was leased to their ancestor, Aribiowu of Ifon, by the Abigborodo people in 1919—well before the British colonial government established the reserve in 1933.

“Our ancestor, Aribiowu, obtained a lease for this land from the Abigborodo people in 1919,” the statement emphasized.

“This agreement was formalized by representatives from both communities, Pa Edun and Okomama. It is absurd for the Sapele Okpe community to assert ownership rights to land with which they have no lawful or historical connection.”

Additionally, the Ugbekoko community referred to findings from a Delta State Judicial Commission of Inquiry that purportedly reaffirmed their claim to the disputed land.

According to the inquiry, the Sapele Okpe community had previously sold their designated 1,200 hectares to CEDDI Corporation Ltd and later attempted to fraudulently claim an extra 760.63 hectares.

“The commission uncovered the Sapele Okpe community’s deceptive efforts to extend their claims beyond the 1,200 hectares allocated to them in 1999,” the Ugbekoko statement claimed.

“Such actions compromise the integrity of the judicial system and infringe on the rights of legitimate landholders.”

Furthermore, Ugbekoko leaders implicated SEPLAT Energy in the alleged unlawful encroachment, stating that the company has recognized the Sapele Okpe community as stakeholders in regions that belong to Ugbekoko.

They pointed out that all SEPLAT’s upstream oil operations, including flow stations, jetties, pipelines, and drilling sites, are situated on Ugbekoko land.

“This constitutes a deliberate and unlawful intrusion into our territory, facilitated by SEPLAT Energy. We are prepared to challenge this through legal avenues,” the leaders declared.

The dispute escalated with accusations from the Sapele Okpe community alleging bias on the part of the Delta State Peace Building and Conflict Resolution Committee, chaired by Chief Edwin Uzor. In defense, Ugbekoko leaders dismissed these claims as unwarranted attempts to undermine the investigation.

“It is absurd for them to suggest that Chief Edwin Uzor’s committee is biased, particularly when it was their own leadership that neglected to partake in joint inspections of the contested land,” Ugbekoko leaders contended.

“Their demand for Chief Uzor’s removal seems to be a calculated effort to intimidate the panel and sway the investigation in their favour.”

This conflict arises from long-standing disagreements regarding the ownership of the Okpe-Sobo Forest Reserve and its adjacent lands. While the Sapele Okpe community claims rights to the reserve, the Ugbekoko community argues that their territory was improperly included in the reserve without the prior consent of their ancestors or the Abigborodo people, who were the original lessors.

In the past, a Delta State Judicial Commission of Inquiry mandated that oil companies operating in the region pay royalties to the Ugbekoko community, yet Ugbekoko leaders assert that these directives still remain largely ignored.

Ugbekoko leaders have urgently appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to overlook what they term “false and misleading accusations” from the Sapele Okpe community.

They urged the governor to maintain his backing of the Edwin Uzor-led peace committee and to act swiftly to resolve the dispute.

“Your Excellency, we earnestly ask you to uphold the truth and ensure justice is served. The unfounded allegations by the Sapele Okpe community should not be allowed to obstruct this investigation,” the statement concluded.

Observers have warned that if the ongoing land dispute is not handled with care, it could lead to heightened tensions between the involved communities. Both parties seek justice, but their conflicting narratives underscore the historical grievances and divisions fuelling the dispute.

As the state government weighs its options, all eyes are on Governor Oborevwori to facilitate a peaceful resolution. The Ugbekoko community remains resolute, asserting that “conscience is an open wound; only the truth can heal it”.

The question remains whether truth and justice can mend the growing rift.

LASTMA trains senior officers to improve traffic management

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority concluded a two-day training on Friday for its senior officers on effective leadership in transport management.

The training, themed Strategic Leadership for Effective Traffic Management in Lagos, took place in the Ikeja area of the state between Thursday and Friday.

Speaking to the press, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa, noted that some of the challenges faced during the 2024 yuletide season in managing traffic across the state had informed the decision to hold the training.

He added that, due to the nature of the state’s transport system, it was important to train senior officers on various aspects of management, including crisis management.

Giwa said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. We understood the difficulties we faced last year, especially during Detty December and even before that. What we set out to do is to be strategic, and for everything we do, we must plan thoroughly.”

“We are here with the top leaders of LASTMA to chart a course for the new year to make road journeys easier and more seamless for Lagosians, which is our primary responsibility. Our core duty is incident management, and those incidents are usually crises.”

In his response, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasised that the agency had continued to invest in training and retraining its staff to address the negative public perception of the agency.

He added that the training would equip officers with the skills needed for effective traffic management, contributing to the state’s economic growth.

He said, “Anywhere in the world, building human capacity is crucial; it is strategic and important if we want to get the best out of our men. If you look at the last three to four years, public outcry has been high, so my administration has prioritised training, retraining, and reorientation of our staff. This is part of the process of repositioning the agency and rebranding the system.”

“Our core responsibility is to ensure the economic growth of Lagos and promote the security and safety of all road users, particularly in traffic incident management.”

The General Manager concluded, “This is a form of assurance to all road users in the state that we are committed to improving their travel time and ensuring safety so that we can have accident-free roads across the state.”

Speaking earlier as a trainer, the former Lagos State Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Ponnle Ajibola, urged the officers to focus on teamwork and proactiveness in crisis management.
She stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders for effective transport crisis management.

“There is a need for LASTMA to be proactive. They must be agile in responding to crises and be able to make decisions that may not necessarily follow the bureaucratic process when necessary. They must lead by example, engage with stakeholders widely, and build a team where they can gather the thoughts, competencies, and knowledge of those around them to make the right decisions,” Ajibola said.

A participant in the training and senior traffic officer, Abimbola Kensington, noted that the training had helped her understand the importance of allowing junior officers to express themselves in decision-making, which she believed would assist her in making informed decisions going forward.

“The training is a huge privilege that affords us the opportunity for enlightenment. I have learned how to delegate duties and how to make my subordinates confident enough to express themselves freely, especially in the line of duty,” Kensington said.

Court fixes February 14 for arraignment of Mercy Chinwo’s ex-manager

Justice Alexander Owoeye of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday fixed February 14, 2025, for the possible arraignment of Ezekiel Thankgod, the former manager of a Nigerian gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo, over alleged $345,000 fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on January 16, 2025, had sought Ezekiel’s arrest over allegations of financial mismanagement, including diverting royalties from Chinwo’s digital platforms and events.

According to the EFCC counsel, Bilikisu Buhari, Ezekiel allegedly misappropriated the funds by failing to remit Chinwo’s share of the earnings.

However, when the case came up on Friday, Ezekiel’s counsel, Monday Ubani, SAN, argued that the arrest warrant was unjustified.

He claimed that the matter was a contractual dispute, not a criminal one, and informed the court that Ezekiel had filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the EFCC before another court to stop his arrest.

Ubani also told the court that his client had filed a preliminary objection to the charge against him and urged the court to vacate the earlier arrest warrant issued against him.

He also told the court that his client had not been served with any charge by the EFCC.

Responding, the EFCC counsel told the court that the commission had been unable to arrest the defendant since the court had ordered his arrest.

She requested the court’s permission to serve the charge on Ezekiel’s lawyer in the open court and further noted that there might be no need for the arrest warrant since Ubani has accepted the charge on behalf of his client.

Ubani, who received the charges on behalf of his client, however, prayed the court for a date for the court to hear the preliminary objection against the fraud allegation charge.

After listening to the arguments of both counsels, Justice Owoeye said, “In the light of the defendant’s lawyer having accepted service of the charges and the preliminary objection against the charge, the court would adjourn to decide on the pending application.”

Consequently, the judge adjourned the case to February 14, 2025, for possible arraignment and hearing of pending applications before the court.

‘Avoid crowded places,’ police warn Kano residents of possible terrorist attacks

The Kano State Police Command has alerted members of the public on suspected terrorists planning to launch attacks on public gatherings in strategic locations within the state.

This is contained in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, on Friday.

“The Kano State Police Command, in liaison with other security agencies, has received intelligence reports of suspected terrorists planning to launch attacks on public gatherings in strategic locations within Kano State.

“In response, we hereby urge residents to exercise caution and avoid crowded places and environments until further notice as a preventive measure to enable security operatives to identify and dislodge possible attackers,” Abdullahi said.

He said as part of an effort to ensure a peaceful Kano State, necessary security arrangements have been put in place.

“A team of experts from the command’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear units have been deployed to strategic locations and are on high alert.

“The unit can be contacted through: 08169884988 or 07067157218 for report of suspicious persons or item(s),” the police spokesman said.

He urged members of the public to report an emergency or suspicious activity to the nearest police station or contact the state command through the designated mobile phone numbers.

He said the command remains committed to protecting lives and properties as well as maintaining law and order in Kano State.

“We appreciate the support and cooperation of the good people of Kano State and urge everyone to remain vigilant. Your vigilance and cooperation are crucial in ensuring public safety,” the statement added.

Russia-Ukraine war avoidable if Trump was President in 2020 – Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday he was ready for talks with US counterpart Donald Trump on Ukraine, praising him as a “smart” leader who might have prevented the conflict from starting in 2022.

Kyiv reacted quickly, warning against being excluded from negotiations.

The Russian leader did not say when talks would take place, and the Kremlin said earlier it was still waiting for “signals” from Washington, despite Trump announcing Thursday he was willing to meet Putin “immediately”.

“We have always said, and I want to emphasise this once again, that we are ready for these negotiations on Ukrainian issues,” Putin told a reporter from Russian state TV.

Praising Trump as a “smart” and “pragmatic” man, Putin also repeated the Republican’s unfounded claim that he won the US presidential election against Joe Biden in 2020.

“I cannot but agree with him that if he had been president — if his victory hadn’t been stolen in 2020 — then maybe there would not have been the crisis in Ukraine that emerged in 2022,” Putin said.

– Pressure from Trump –

The nearly three-year Ukraine conflict has plunged relations between the two nuclear powers to their lowest levels since the Cold War.

Trump, who was inaugurated on Monday, has called the conflict “ridiculous” and threatened Russia with tougher economic sanctions if it does not agree to stop its offensive.

“If they don’t settle this war soon, like almost immediately, I’m going to put massive tariffs on Russia, and massive taxes, and also big sanctions,” the Republican said during a Fox News interview on Thursday.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on the same day, Trump said he would ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to lower oil prices, claiming: “If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately.”

Putin pushed back at Trump’s claim that lower oil prices might expedite the end of the conflict.

“I have a hard time imagining there will be decisions taken that are detrimental to the American economy,” Putin said Friday.

– ‘Come back to reality’ –

Neither side has shown signs of de-escalating hostilities since Trump’s inauguration, despite the President claiming he would end the conflict in “24 hours” once in power.

Kyiv on Friday warned against being excluded from any talks.

“He (Putin) wants to negotiate the fate of Europe — without Europe. And he wants to talk about Ukraine without Ukraine,” the head of Ukraine’s presidential office Andriy Yermak said.

“This is not going to happen. Putin needs to come back to reality himself, or he will be brought back. This is not how it works in the modern world.”

Russian aerial attacks near Kyiv killed three people and wounded several others, Ukrainian officials said Friday, while Ukraine fired 120 drones at least 12 Russian regions, including the capital Moscow.

The Kremlin has launched drone or missile attacks at Kyiv almost every day since sending troops into Ukraine in February 2022, ostensibly targeting military and energy facilities.

“Three people were killed in an enemy attack in the Kyiv region,” the emergency services said in a statement on social media.

Fragments of a drone had struck a 10-story residential building after the head of the region said a private home had also been hit, it added.

Black smoke billowed from a residential building damaged in the strike as rescue workers hauled out the bodies of the victims, official images from the scene showed.

In Russia, the Ukrainian military said it launched an overnight drone attack striking an oil refinery, power station facilities, and an electronics plant.

State media reported that a microelectronics factory had halted work after six Ukrainian drones damaged production and storage facilities in the Bryansk region.

TCN completes tower relocation, restores power supply to Abuja substation

Three days after the scheduled deadline, the Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced the complete relocation of eight 132kV and 33kV towers along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV transmission line, to the delight of residents in the Federal Capital Territory.

It also stated the restoration of full bulk power to the 132/33kV Apo Transmission Substation, ensuring the resumption of normal power distribution to the area.

The TCN announced this in a statement signed by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, on Friday.

Recall that on January 3, the company announced that due to the Federal Capital Development Authority’s road dualisation project, it would relocate eight towers along the Kukwaba/Apo transmission line.

TCN further stated that the relocation work would necessitate a planned power outage from Monday, January 6 to Monday, January 20, 2025 from 9am to 4pm daily.

This, it said, was the estimated duration for the dismantling and construction of the towers as well as restringing of the power cables that would enable resumption of bulk power supply to the Apo Transmission Substation from Gwagwalada Substation.

It noted that the relocation of the transmission towers was a necessity for the road completion project, assuring all that power supply would be restored as soon as the tower’s relocation and cable stringing were completed.

The TCN spokesperson, while thanking affected customers for their patience, announced that AEDC can now resume normal electricity supply from the substation to its customers in the affected areas, effectively ending the previously implemented load rationing.

The statement read, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria is pleased to announce the restoration of full bulk power to its 132/33kV Apo Transmission Substation, effective Thursday, January 23, 2025.

“This restoration follows the successful relocation of eight 132kV and 33kV towers along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line (Southern Expressway route), necessitated by the Federal Capital Development Agency’s road dualization project along the Apo axis.

“The two-week relocation work, which commenced on Monday, January 6, 2025, involved dismantling, and reconstructing the towers, as well as restringing power cables.

“With the restoration of full bulk power, Abuja DisCo can now provide normal electricity supply from the substation to its customers in the affected areas, ending the previous load rationing.

“TCN appreciates the patience and understanding of the affected electricity consumers during this period.”

VIDEO: Police arrest two over uber driver’s murder, assault on sex worker

The Delta State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of an Uber driver and the assault of a commercial sex worker in Warri.

This was disclosed in a statement released by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, on Friday.

According to police reports, the suspects hired the services of the Uber driver and invited a commercial sex worker, taking both to a nightclub. After leaving the nightclub, the suspects allegedly strangled and killed the driver.

The statement read: “Viewer discretion is advised!

“We have arrested these two suspects who hired an Uber driver and also invited a commercial sex worker in Warri around December last year.

“They first took them to a nightclub and then, on their way to the supposed destination, they strangled and killed the driver and threw the girl out of the vehicle.”

Women affairs minister unveils committee to strengthen child policy

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has unveiled a committee to review the National Child Policy of 2007.

In a statement signed by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Jonathan Eze, on Friday, the minister described the initiative as a critical step in her commitment to the well-being of children.

She emphasised that it also demonstrates her resolve to build a conducive atmosphere for Nigerian children to thrive and lead brighter futures.

The minister urged the committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Dr Maryam Keshinro, to adopt a holistic approach, engaging stakeholders from all sectors—government, civil society, and, most importantly, the voices of children themselves.

She stressed that the policy must be inclusive, addressing the diverse needs of all children, including those from marginalised communities and those with disabilities.

The statement reads in part: “As we gather today, it is important to acknowledge a fundamental truth: that our children are the cornerstone of our nation. They are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are our greatest hope and most precious resource.

“It is necessary that their rights are upheld and their needs are met, nurturing and creating an environment where they can thrive and reach their full potential.

“Our emphasis on this important task of reviewing the National Child Policy reflects the progress we have made since its inception. While we have seen commendable advancements in sectors such as education, health, and child protection, we must also recognise the challenges that remain, such as poverty, gender inequality, inadequate access to quality education, and the impacts of insecurity that threaten the future of our children.

“In light of this, it is vital that the committee understands the task before you is both crucial and challenging. You are entrusted with reviewing a policy that will guide our nation in protecting and promoting children’s rights. Your expertise, insights, and commitment will be essential to ensuring that the policy reflects the realities children face today and anticipates the challenges of tomorrow.”

Sulaiman-Ibrahim further urged the committee to adopt a holistic approach, engaging with stakeholders across all sectors—government, civil society, and, most importantly, the voices of children themselves.

She maintained that it is essential for the policy to be inclusive and address the diverse needs of all children, particularly those from marginalised communities and those with disabilities.

The minister also encouraged the committee to leverage technology and innovation in their approach. “As you are aware, the world is changing rapidly, and our policies must adapt to ensure that our children are equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in a dynamic global landscape,” she said.

She added, “This review is not just about creating documents or frameworks; it is about transforming lives and ensuring every child in Nigeria has access to education, healthcare, and a safe environment where they can grow and develop.”

Sulaiman-Ibrahim expressed her appreciation to the members of the committee for availing themselves for the task, stating that together, they have the power to make a lasting impact that will benefit generations to come.

“We can only achieve this if we work diligently, passionately, and collaboratively to create a National Child Policy that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound,” she said.

The minister also thanked President Bola Tinubu for creating a conducive environment that allows her to pursue the mandate of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children, and Vulnerable Groups without hindrance. She also expressed gratitude to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her support and motherly advice, which has encouraged her in carrying out her duties successfully.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary thanked the minister for her leadership and assured her that the committee would work diligently to produce all-inclusive policy documents for the benefit of Nigerian children.

The event was attended by the ministry’s directors and the consultant, Professor Taofeek Muhammad Ladan, among others.

Bayelsa assembly moves against illegal revenue collection

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has taken steps to tackle the menace of illegal revenue collection, denying the state huge financial benefits.

The House, led by the Speaker, Abraham Ingobere, convened a plenary session on Wednesday to address critical issues surrounding illegal revenue collection.

A motion sponsored and moved by Daniel Charles, representing Brass Constituency 1, on the “Urgent Call to Halt Unwholesome Activities of Dangerous Illegal Revenue Collection at Swali Waterside Jetty and Other Transport Terminals Across the State” was thoroughly discussed at the plenary.

Daniel stated that due to the absence of road networks connecting many local government areas such as Brass, Southern Ijaw, and Ekeremor to Yenagoa, the state capital, traders from those areas use the Swali Waterside Jetty for movement of goods to and fro Yenagoa.

According to him, despite significant revenue generated from the jetty, illegal collections by various non-state actors have put an increasing financial burden on traders and commuters using the jetty.

Speaking in favour of the motion, the Deputy Speaker, Michael Ogbere, representing Ekeremor III, regretted that because of the activities of the illegal revenue collectors, the prices of goods kept increasing, especially in the affected local government areas.

Ogbere stressed that the House of Assembly and relevant committees needed to up their game and follow through with their resolutions on the issue of illegal revenue collection.

Also contributing in favour of the motion, Ayonatiminyo Omubo of Brass Constituency II said the criminal extortion being carried out by illegal revenue collectors could adversely affect the state‘s internally generated revenue efforts as businessmen may consider diverting their goods to other routes.

In his contribution, George Oteigbanyo of Nembe Constituency I stated that the activities of the illegal revenue collectors cut across all jetties in the state and that the government owed these traders the responsibility to protect them in the course of their legitimate businesses.

In his contribution, Living Mitin of Ekeremor Constituency II said that such activities could create a situation of double taxation, which was not good for “our business environment. We must make sure that those saddled with the responsibility of checking these people are also being checked themselves.”

The house, therefore, passed a one-point resolution urging the “Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment, along with all relevant agencies, to take immediate action against non-state actors engaged in illegal revenue collection at Swali Jetty and other transport terminals within the state.”

Alleged $345,000 Fraud: EFCC’s Arrest Warrant Against Mercy Chinwo’s Ex-Manager Withdrawn

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn an arrest order against Ezekiel ThankGod, the former manager of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, in connection with an alleged $345,000 fraud.

On January 16, 2025, Justice Alexander Owoeye issued a bench warrant for the music producer’s arrest after the EFCC filed an ex parte plea to compel him to appear in court to face criminal charges.

During Friday’s proceedings, the EFCC’s lawyer, Mrs. Bilikisu Buhari, requested the withdrawal of the arrest warrant.

Buhari explained that since the charges had already been served to Ezekiel’s lawyer, Monday Ubani, SAN, in open court, the arrest warrant was no longer necessary.

In response, the judge consented to the withdrawal of the bench warrant.

Lagos shuts Oshodi pedestrian bridge over safety concerns

The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the pedestrian bridge connecting Oshodi Bus Terminals 2 and 3, citing safety concerns.

The government raised alarms over the bridge’s safety and structural integrity.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, issued the order in a statement released on Friday, expressing concerns about the bridge’s condition.

“The order also mandated the contractor responsible for the initial construction of the terminal, through the Office of Infrastructure, to place concrete barriers at the entrances leading to the bridge. This is to safeguard the lives of pedestrians who use the infrastructure,” he said.

The commissioner explained that the closure would enable a comprehensive structural integrity assessment of the bridge, to determine whether it requires repairs or reconstruction.

Osiyemi advised pedestrians to use an alternative bridge located 30 metres away while the assessment is conducted.

Anambra INEC commissioner promises free, fair polls

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission in Anambra State, Dr Elizabeth Agwu, has pledged to ensure credible elections in the state, claiming that she has made the electoral process unpurchasable for politicians over the last three years.

Agwu further stated that she had successfully overseen free, fair, and credible elections in the state during her tenure.

She made these remarks during a two-day stakeholders’ dialogue engagement organised by the International Press Centre in Awka on Thursday and Friday. The theme of the dialogue was, ‘Rebuilding Trust in the Electoral Process and Elections,’ aimed at fostering insightful discussions among key election and democratic governance stakeholders.

The dialogue came ahead of the forthcoming by-election in the Anambra South Senatorial District and the November 8, 2025, governorship election.

Agwu said, “Everybody in Anambra who knows me knows that I am a working REC. I have supervised three elections here. It is in Anambra that every politician who has money tries to buy elections, but they could not because I made it unpurchasable. I told the politicians, if you feel you are strong and rich and want to buy the election, you have to give me N3 billion. Out of it, I will give N1 billion to my staff and take N1 billion to enjoy myself on a Caribbean Island.”

She continued, “Because no one could pay me that money, I was allowed to conduct the elections, and these politicians failed. I told the people of Anambra that their votes would count and urged them to stop selling their PVCs. Selling PVCs is shooting ourselves in the leg, as that is what will be used to vote.”

The REC praised Anambra as the state with the highest distribution of PVCs in the country, a project she initiated to serve her people.

“We at INEC have our job clearly spelt out in the Nigerian constitution without any external influence. However, politicians often try to influence us to act according to their wishes,” she stated.

Agwu recounted an incident during the last election where a mother, who was a Supervisory Polling Officer, sold a voter’s register, voter’s cards, and result sheets to political parties. She lamented that it was too late to address this issue, leading to a repeat election in February.

Speaking on the upcoming by-election in Anambra South Senatorial District and the November 8, 2025, governorship election, Agwu assured that INEC was fully prepared to conduct the elections credibly and transparently.

She disclosed that the Senate had not yet notified INEC of the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, which would allow the commission to proceed with the by-election.

Agwu also urged Anambra residents, especially politicians, to adhere to the rules as the state prepares for the 2025 governorship election, assuring them that INEC would ensure their votes count.

Earlier, the lead speaker at the event, Dr Nwachukwu Orji, a former INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Anambra and a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, expressed a vote of no confidence in the commission.

Orji criticised the acceptability of vote buying and other unprofessional conduct by INEC officials, which he claimed had eroded trust in the commission. He noted that the decline of the electoral process started in the 2015 general elections and worsened in the 2023 exercise, with INEC losing its integrity due to the unprofessional conduct of some officials.

In his welcome address, Mr Lanre Arogundade, Executive Director of the International Press Centre, explained that the stakeholder’s dialogue aimed to rebuild public trust, deepen commitments to a collaborative electoral process, and prepare INEC for the 2025 governorship election and the 2027 elections.

“This event is designed to address and mitigate negative perceptions about elections in Nigeria, rebuild public trust, and galvanise the support of critical stakeholders as partners with INEC in enhancing credible elections,” Arogundade added.

Another 10x Altcoin In the Making? Experts Predict DTX Exchange (DTX) as Most Likely in 2025

The crypto market is set to undergo another bull wave with expectations of increased global exposure due to reduced regulatory pressures and the increasing number of crypto ETFs. Due to this, traders are actively searching the markets for the best altcoin that can provide a 10x return in 2025.

Thus, this season’s most successful presale token, DTX Exchange, is in the spotlight. Experts suggest it can be the best altcoin due to the immense demand for the token, which is indicated by the massive presale momentum and steadily growing investor participation.

Role of DTX Exchange In The Future Of Online Trading

The online trading industry has evolved significantly over the last few years, and many new exchanges and platforms have developed to adapt to traders’ changing and growing needs. However, the industry’s growth is still hindered by an outdated structure, which creates an overwhelming number of challenges and issues.

DTX Exchange is taking a hybrid approach by merging the best elements of centralized and decentralized protocols to eradicate stubborn issues that have long plagued the industry. It aims to transform trading with a platform that seamlessly fuses CEX and DEX architecture, creating a more secure and efficient investment environment.

Moreover, through decentralization, DTX Exchange wants to improve accessibility and allow traders from all locations and backgrounds to participate in the global financial markets. Thus, the platform has a no-KYC policy, meaning users are not required to provide their personal information while registering and can start investing in all assets with complete privacy.

Hybrid Platform Revolutionizes Trading

The hybrid nature of DTX Exchange enables it to host a diverse range of asset classes, including Stocks, Bonds, Crypto, FX, etc., allowing users to trade in a total of 120,000 assets under a single platform. Also, it is the exchange since it provides up to 1000x leverage, so traders can safely amplify their profits with sufficiently large positions while risking a small fraction of their capital.

Additionally, users can manage all their digital assets with the non-custodial Phoenix Wallet. This decentralized wallet removes restrictions various nations impose on investing in certain assets, allowing traders to access all global financial instruments regardless of nationality. The wallet is backed by the platform’s native layer-1 hybrid blockchain, VulcanX.

This hybrid blockchain displayed a remarkable speed of 200,000 TPS in the testnet phase, which is on par with the leading exchanges in the market. Its highly scalable infrastructure and selective transparency allow DTX Exchange to provide consistent prices and low slippage during high trading activity and network congestion periods.

Furthermore, DTX Exchange helps users improve their trading through real-time on-chain analytics and signals. These enable traders to make data-driven decisions and better time their trades with transparent network activity.

Users also have access to copy-trading, through which they can observe the investment patterns and decision-making of experienced traders and incorporate their strategies into their trades. They can also mimic these strategies using built-in trading bots that precisely execute orders based on user-defined strategies.

Why DTX Is The Best Altcoin For 10x Growth

The presale for DTX Exchange’s native token, DTX, dubbed the best altcoin, has been the fastest-growing presale lately and has raised over $12 million. The token is available to acquire at $0.14 in stage seven and will soon surge to $0.16 when it progresses to the next stage.

Early investors who obtained DTX at $0.02 per token through this presale have already made a tremendous 600% return. However, it is not too late to get in since the new investors will also make quick profits with a launch price of $0.20. Moreover, DTX is expected to surge 10x after the presale, providing investors with the best altcoin returns in the 2025 bull run.

Less than a week after her abduction, with the support of the Force Headquarters technical intelligence platforms and the Ogun State police operatives, Folasade was rescued from her captors after a gun duel with the criminals in the swampy area of Ikorodu, Lagos State on Wednesday.

APC Govt Responsible For Premature Death Of Politicians – Sowore

Controversial political activist, Omoyele Sowore, has blamed rulling All Progressives Congress, for the premature death of politicians in Nigeria.

The former presidential candidate for African Action Congress in the 2023 general elections, led this out in a post shared via his X page on Thursday.

Sowore also recalled how numerous bye-elections were held due to the deaths of some political office holders.

The post reads: “Today, I participated in a consultative meeting between @inecnigeria Nigeria and political parties in Abuja, where an unexpected issue emerged concerning the numerous bye-elections held this year due to the deaths of over 12 political office holders across Nigeria.

US Begins Massive Deportation Operation, Arrests Over 500

In a swift and decisive move, United States authorities have arrested 538 undocumented migrants and deported hundreds more in a large-scale operation, just days into President Donald Trump’s second tenure.

This action is part of Trump’s promised crackdown on illegal immigration, which was a central theme of his election campaign.

According to White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt’s X post on Friday, “The Trump Administration arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals.

“The largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway. Promises made. Promises kept.”

The deportation operation involved military aircraft and was carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

However, the operation has raised concerns, with Newark city mayor, Ras J. Baraka stating that ICE agents “raided a local establishment, detaining undocumented residents as well as citizens, without producing a warrant.”

The US Congress has also approved a bill to expand pretrial incarceration for foreign criminal suspects, further solidifying Trump’s tough stance on immigration.

This development comes as Trump has signed executive orders declaring a “national emergency” at the southern border and deploying more troops to the area.

The administration has vowed to deport “criminal aliens” and overhaul the US entry system.

Gov Oyebanji Kicks Against Sharia Court Establishment In Ekiti

Ekiti State Governor, Abiodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s led government has kicked against purported establishment of Sharia Court in the state.

This was contained in a statement by the sate’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dayo Apata on Thursday.

INFORMATION NIGERIA reports that the development is coming, following some reports about the first public sitting of Ekiti State Shariah Panel.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Apata, noted that laws in Ekiti do not recognise Sharia court, stressing that the existing judicial structure is adequate to address all kinds of disputes.

The statement partly reads: “There is an existing legal structure in Ekiti State (i.e. Customary Court, Customary Court of Appeal and High Court) that has been handling issues relating to Islamic, Christian and traditional marriages and inheritance without any rancour or agitation.

“The government will not compromise on any action that may hinder the prevailing peace and fester hostility in the state.

“The Sharia Courts in the North are equivalent to the Customary Courts in the southern part of Nigeria.

“Wherein appeals from Sharia Courts in the North go to the Shariah Court of Appeal, the state similarly has the Customary Court of Appeal that hears appeals from the Customary Courts.

“The Customary Courts and the Customary Court of Appeal can effectively take care of any customary issues arising from Yoruba traditional marriages, Islamic marriages and Christian marriages, especially the ones that were not backed-up by the statutory marriages which can only be dissolved by the states High Courts throughout Nigeria.

“Be wary of being used as tools by politicians and fifth columnists because the government will not hesitate to invoke the full weight of the law to protect the constitution of the federation and maintain peaceful co-existence in the state.”

Ganduje Urges Gov Bago To Take Offensive Against Bandits In Niger

Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has advocated for a proactive approach in combating banditry and insurgency.

He emphasized the need for the military to take control of forests in the North, rather than adopting a defensive strategy.

Ganduje made this call during on Thursday during a condolence visit to Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, following the tragic tanker explosion incidents at Dikko junction in Suleja.

He commended Bago’s efforts in maintaining security in the state, noting that Niger State has the largest land mass and highest number of forests in Nigeria.

“Your Excellency, the solution to this menace is to conquer the forest. The bandits are in the forest, why have we been on the defensive instead of being on the offensive?,” he queried, as revealed in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu.

He cited his experience as Governor of Kano State, where he requested military intervention to take over Falgore Forest, resulting in the displacement of bandits and restored peace in the area.

“When I was the Governor of Kano State, I requested through the Federal Government that the military takes over Falgore Forest and the military built a military training ground there. That was how bandits were chased away from that forest and Kano is at peace,” he said

Man Sentenced To Two Years In Prison For Cutting Off Woman's Finger
A dramatic turn of events has led to the sentencing of Mas’ud Yusuf to two years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Yusuf was found guilty of cutting off his female friend’s finger and injuring another after seeing her with one of his friends, as stated by Daily Trust.

According to the prosecuting counsel, J. N. Atinko, the incident occurred on January 11, when the victim, Fatima Muhammad Lawal, reported the crime at the “A” police division in Dei-Dei.

Yusuf admitted to committing the crime, citing anger as his motivation.

He begged the court for leniency, but Chief Magistrate Linda J. C of the Abuja magistrates’ court sitting in Jiwa, ultimately handed down the two-year sentence.

“Darlington Will Never Beg Burna Boy” – Lawyer Insists After Singer’s Release From Detention

Stanley Alieke, the lawyer representing Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington, has revealed what his client will not do in the ongoing defamation case against fellow artist Burna Boy.

Information Nigeria previously reported that Speed Darlington was arrested and held by the police after claiming that Burna Boy was allegedly involved in an improper relationship with the troubled American rapper and music executive, Diddy.

The trial of the singer, who was released on Tuesday after being granted bail weeks ago, is set to resume on 18 March at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Speed Darlington’s lawyer revealed in an interview with BBC Pidgin posted on Facebook Thursday that the singer will not try to negotiate with the ‘Last Last’ crooner.

READ MORE: Portable Displeased With Odunlade Adekola Over Video With Baby Mama

He said: “Speed Darlington will never beg Burna Boy, and as his counsel, we will never support him because of all he has suffered. He won’t even agree if I advise him to beg Burna Boy. I cannot even advise him to do so because the matter is already in court. Whether he begs or not, it is now within the court’s jurisdiction to determine if what Speed Darlington said defamed Burna Boy.

“If he begs, it would mean he has pleaded guilty because Burna Boy’s petition against him claims that what he said damaged his international reputation and caused him to lose endorsements. Why didn’t Burna Boy initiate a civil action in court instead? The court could have equated any damages to financial compensation.”

Mr. Alieke also mentioned that Speed Darlington’s extended detention led to financial losses for him (Speedy) and that his legal team had filed a lawsuit seeking financial compensation to uphold his fundamental human rights.

It is worth noting that Speed Darlington filed a N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

However, the case was postponed until January 27th after the IGP’s attorney asked for more time to analyse new evidence.

“No amount they give him can equal the hardship he has suffered. They made him miss December and January shows—about 20 events he was invited to. We will present these issues to the court, as some of the show organisers had already paid him. After his release, people started sending him messages demanding refunds of their money, like N5 million, N2 million, etc.

“These are the issues we will address before even discussing the infringement of his human rights. Even if we increase the claim to N1 billion, Speed Darlington is a person of international standard, and they subjected him to unnecessary suffering,” said Mr Alieke.

He claimed that his client was being held in a facility intended for criminals awaiting trial, despite the police being required to grant him administrative bail at the time of his arrest.

He noted, “Some people were saying that it serves him right because he talks carelessly, but no matter what, that does not mean the police should keep him for that number of days or subject him to such hardship.

Former governor of Niger State, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has questioned Federal Government over its decision on border closure.

Mr. Mu’azu noted that despite the action, goods from Nigeria are smuggled to other West African countries.

Speaking at the 22nd Daily Trust Dialogue themed Food Security: Availability or Affordability in Abuja on Thursday, the former governor urged ministry of livestock to partner with universities of education and agriculture in educating farmers.

He said “What is the importance of closing borders? What is the importance of that while the population of Nigeria is almost the population of other ECOWAS members? And every market you go to in ECOWAS countries you will discover that more than half of the things in that market are from Nigeria.

“For example, in Niger the cow is still cheaper than in Nigeria. Apart from the inflation, it has always been like that because we used to send people there on good days to get these cows either for slaughter or Sallah.

“Why is this so? Please, do what you have to do. Do also the education.

Mr. Babangida also raised concerns over quality of education in northern part of the country, saying that no state in the region has up to 50 per cent of qualified teachers.

He added: “The second thing I am pursuing is education. In the northern states, no state has 50% qualified teachers. Even those attending the schools now, let alone those who cannot attend school.

“Federal universities should be used in agriculture and education to educate people. We need education to have people who are passionate about a particular thing.”

Abbas concluded by emphasizing the House of Representatives’ readiness to partner with the media and other stakeholders to create and pass legislation ensuring food security for all Nigerians.

“You’re A Transactional Politician, Opportunist” – Gov Bala Slams Wike Over Alleged Anti-Party Behavior

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed has berated Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike over his recent media chat.

INFORMATION NIGERIA reports that Mr. Wike, had faulted Governor Bala for antagonizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The former governor of Rivers State also criticized Bauchi Governor for opposing tax reform bill, a legislation which has generated controversy across the nation.

Reacting to Wike’s media chat in a statement on Thursday by Governor Bala’s Special Adviser for Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, described the FCT’s Minister as a ‘transactional politician.’

Gidado also said that former governor of Rivers State’s loyalty shifts with his personal ambitions.

He added that Wike’s political career owed much to the opportunities provided by Peoples Democratic Party.

The statement partly reads: “While Wike accuses others of insincerity, he has seamlessly transitioned from being a self-proclaimed PDP stalwart to an ardent supporter of the APC government.

“This chameleonic behaviour raises serious questions about Wike’s credibility and moral compass.

“Nigerians are not deceived by Wike’s antics. They see a man willing to undermine his party for personal gain, a man whose loyalty shifts as quickly as his alliances.

“By contrast, Senator Bala Mohammed’s opposition to the Tax Reform Bills reflects a principled stand aimed at ensuring inclusive governance and accountability.

“His constructive interventions have already led to significant adjustments in the reform process, underscoring the importance of meaningful dialogue over hollow rhetoric.

“Yet, he now gleefully undermines the very foundation that nurtured him. It is disheartening that a man who owes so much to a party that stood by him in his political journey has chosen to be a willing tool in its denigration.

“His recent media outburst was yet another reminder of his transactional approach to politics, where personal ambition eclipses loyalty, principles, and collective interests.”

FG Approves N4bn Cash Transfer For Displaced, Vulnerable Households

The Federal Government has disclosed a significant intervention to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria, approving N4 billion for conditional cash transfers to vulnerable households.

This move aims to support at least “10 million displaced households,” primarily targeting women, especially widows, pregnant women, and those with disabilities.

According to Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof Nentawe Yilwada, “We are prioritizing women, especially widows, pregnant women, and those with disabilities. The experiences of displaced women, particularly those facing pregnancy or disability, are especially challenging.

“Furthermore, a N4bn provision has been approved to support vulnerable groups through cash transfers, targeting families affected by natural disasters and other crises.

“We understand these vulnerabilities and will continue to support those who are most in need.”

The cash transfer program, he said, is set to begin in February and continue through April, providing immediate relief to families affected by displacement, particularly in the Northeast.

Additionally, the government has approved N2 billion in interest-free loans to farmers in rural communities to boost food production and self-sufficiency.

The program will provide loans ranging “from N300,000 to N400,000 per household,” helping farmers access necessary resources and linking them to market opportunities.

Yilwada emphasized that “Female-headed households experience higher rates of hunger than male-headed ones, and this is where we will focus much of our efforts. Ensuring access to food, water, healthcare, and safety for these women is one of our top priorities.”

The initiative is part of the government’s “broader strategy to alleviate poverty and provide relief to those in urgent need,” with a focus on addressing the needs of internally displaced persons, returnees, and affected communities across Nigeria.

Mr. Igwe Henry, Sector Commander for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi, confirmed the accident.

He stated that he had no further information about the casualties because the victims were rescued before his team arrived at the spot.

“At the time our men from Amasiri Unit Command got the information, and got to the scene, the victims had been rescued.

“So my men didn’t directly carry out the rescue exercise, and therefore could not ascertain the true position of what happened. Except that the crash occurred on 22nd January about 14.00 hours. The route was Amasiri-Okigwe, where they call Amenu village in Okposi.

“Two vehicles were involved, one was a Toyota commercial bus, grey color, and the other was a Mercedes-Benz tipper (truck), a commercial Mercedes-Benz tipper, the regular Tipper that you see around.

“So, from preliminary findings, it was allegedly caused by excessive speed on the part of the commercial vehicle, that is the bus.

“But the details as to the number injured and so on have not been ascertained, because like I said, the victims were actually rescued by bystanders and then taken to David Umahi Hospital in Uburu.

“And then the items recovered at the scene, I was told, is in the custody of one Chief Amos, of Amenu village in the same Okposi.

“At the King David’s Hospital, where my men went, the ones they saw were actually in stable condition,” he said.

Foluke Oladeinde, the Ebonyi State Coordinator of NYSC, paid a visit to the injured prospective corps members in the hospital.

“I am not in a right frame of mind to talk now. I am in the hospital now. Yes the accident occurred but I can’t talk right now,” she told journalists on Thursday.

A police source disclosed that the suspects had followed the victim, who is also believed to be a member of a rival cult group, and shot him in the right arm. The victim narrowly escaped death and filed a report at the Irrua Police Station.

The source stated that the attack was motivated by continuing rivalry amongst cult groups in the region.

Judge Halts Trump’s ‘Blatantly Unconstitutional’ Birthright Citizenship Order

A United States federal judge has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship, deeming it “blatantly unconstitutional.”

The order, signed by Trump just hours after taking office, directed government agencies to stop issuing citizenship documentation to babies born in the US to parents without legal status.

Judge John Coughenour’s ruling came after a brief hearing in Seattle, where four states – Arizona, Illinois, Oregon, and Washington – asked the court to immediately block the order.

The Judge, on Thursday, questioned the order’s validity, asking, “Is this order constitutional?” before interrupting the Justice Department lawyer’s response to say, “This is a blatantly unconstitutional order.”

Coughenour’s decision prevents the order from taking effect for now, as he weighs whether to issue a preliminary injunction that would block the order in the longer term.

The order, titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” has sparked controversy and lawsuits from immigration advocacy groups and Democratic Attorneys General.

They argue that the order violates the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause, which guarantees birthright citizenship ¹.

Nicholas Brown, the Attorney General of Washington, welcomed the Judge’s decision, saying, “This was fairly obvious. This was simple.”

The nationwide block is seen as a significant setback for the Trump administration’s efforts to restrict birthright citizenship.

The Trump administration is expected to appeal the ruling.

Police Allegedly Shield Drug Suspect In Bayelsa, Triggering Clash With NDLEA

Chaos erupted at the Ekeki Police Division in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Thursday as a violent clash broke out between the Nigeria Police and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

PUNCH Metro learned that some NDLEA operatives were in the area to apprehend a woman suspected of being a drug peddler. They had also made an entry in the police records before proceeding with their operation.

However, as the NDLEA operatives carried out their operation, policemen from the Ekeki Police Division blocked their efforts, leading to a confrontation.

An eyewitness told PUNCH on Thursday that the confrontation led to several shots being fired, triggering panic among residents in the area.

“As I was at the Bayelsa Newspaper Corporation, I heard some shots, about six shots, and I decided to find out. As I got to the Ekeki Police Division, I saw a confrontation between the police and NDLEA operatives,” the eyewitness said.

It was revealed that during the incident, the police fired at two NDLEA vehicles in an attempt to prevent the agency from taking the suspect.

The eyewitness further suggested that it appeared the police were allegedly shielding the drug suspect, allowing her to continue her drug activities near the police division.

“The incident has made people suspect that the police are allegedly providing some kind of support for the woman to do drug business in the area,” he said.

When contacted, the NDLEA spokesman, Mr Howells Oba, said, “Our men went for an operation behind the Ekeki Police Division. Our man made an entry at the police station.”

On the shooting, Oba said, “They shot two of our vehicles and we are trying to see how we can take them out.”

According to him, the agency plans to release a formal statement regarding the situation but emphasized that they were working to resolve the matter and restore order.

When reached for comment, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Musa Mohammed, stated that he was rushing to the scene to investigate the incident.

“I am going there now to find out what happened,” Mohammed stated.

Inflation: 13m More Nigerians Risk Falling Below Poverty Line In 2025 – Report

Rising inflation, high interest rates, and naira depreciation could push an additional 13 million Nigerians below the national poverty line by 2025, according to a new report titled ‘2025 Nigerian Budget and Economic Outlook’ by PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited (PwC).

The report stated, “Macroeconomic pressure points such as rising inflation, high interest rates, and naira depreciation may drive an additional 13 million people below the national poverty line by 2025.”

PwC further noted, “The number of people living below the national poverty line is projected to increase by about 13 million by 2025,” attributing this rise to the country’s worsening inflation and high cost of living.

The report highlighted these economic headwinds as major contributors to the projected increase in poverty levels.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s headline inflation rate stood at 34.80 per cent as of December 2024.

Also, the President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Chief Francis Meshioye, disclosed that the manufacturing sector faced severe challenges in 2024, driven by macroeconomic issues such as high inflation, soaring interest rates, and the depreciating naira.

On a positive note, however, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is projecting the economy to grow by 4.17 per cent this year, driven by ongoing reforms and stabilising inflation, Governor Olayemi Cardoso said yesterday.

Reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and two devaluations of the naira, have contributed to rising inflation in Africa’s most populous country.

Cardoso stated at a conference that inflation, currently at 34.8 per cent, is expected to decline as the reforms begin to yield positive results. He also noted that foreign exchange reserves are expected to rise gradually, supported by increased oil production.

Oil output is forecast to reach 2.3 million barrels per day by mid-year, Cardoso revealed. According to him, Nigeria recorded foreign exchange inflows exceeding $6 billion in 2024, pushing foreign exchange reserves to over $40 billion.

Cardoso emphasised that the Central Bank’s priority remains maintaining price stability and strengthening market confidence. To achieve this, the bank plans to improve transparency and efficiency in the foreign exchange market.

“With limited opportunities for FX arbitrage, we anticipate greater interest in real sector development,” he added.

Similarly, Nigeria’s economy is projected to witness a decline in inflation and stabilisation of foreign exchange (FX) rates by 2025 as reforms in key economic sectors and policy adjustments take effect.

Experts shared this projection yesterday in Lagos during the Executive Roundtable on Nigeria’s 2025 Budget and Economic Outlook, organised by PwC and BusinessDay Media.

The event, themed ‘Insights and Strategies for Navigating Nigeria’s Economic, Fiscal and Policy Landscape in 2025’, highlighted the country’s fiscal challenges and opportunities.

The experts noted that government revenue is expected to grow in 2025 due to ongoing reforms. However, achieving the ambitious revenue target of N36.35 trillion will require substantial effort.

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, emphasised that the high Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) is contributing to inflation rather than reducing it. He explained that businesses are forced to secure financing for working capital at higher costs, thereby driving up prices.

Oyedele expressed optimism about inflation easing in 2025. He observed that while scepticism persists, the average inflation rate for 2024 stood at 33 per cent, and if conditions remain stable, the nominal inflation rate for 2025 is projected to drop to 25 per cent.

He also highlighted external factors that could impact Nigeria’s economy. According to Oyedele, President Donald Trump’s pledge to intensify oil and gas drilling may result in lower global oil prices. While this could alleviate price pressures, it presents a trade-off, as government revenue might decline due to reduced oil prices.

“The Central bank is going to introduce a code for FX by the end of the month which would improve the transparency issue. And once it’s addressed, the pressure on the FX has been taken off significantly.

“About $20 million every day is off the market. Some of the reforms we are doing from the fiscal side, it’s about $4 billion we are taking off the market as well. Nigerian businesses are being asked to pay levies, taxes, and regulatory fees in dollars. It’s about $4 billion. Once we pass our tax bills, that’s off the market. As we’re taking off those pressure from the market, we’re seeing improved liquidity coming in,” he said.

He said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is expected to contribute approximately $10 billion to the federation account this year, compared to less than $2 billion remitted last year.

He stressed the need for the industry to shift its focus from merely stabilising the naira exchange rate to fostering its recovery.

Oyedele expressed his belief that the current exchange rate does not reflect the naira’s true value, asserting that an exchange rate of N1,500 per dollar is not a fair valuation, as the naira remains undervalued.

The Chief Executive Officer of First Bank of Nigeria, Olusegun Alebiosu, highlighted the likelihood of a drop in food inflation within the year, attributing it to increased investments in agriculture expected in 2025.

Partner and Lead at PwC Strategy & Practice, West Market Area, Olusegun Zaccheaus, stated that factors such as improved revenue generation, debt sustainability, broad policy interventions, monetary policy alignment, fiscal strategy highlights, and addressing key issues for macroeconomic stability will shape Nigeria’s economy in 2025.

He noted that FX stability, price stability, and interest rates are critical monetary issues for 2025. According to him, easing volatility will depend on price discovery, transparency, market friction, liquidity, supply-demand backlogs, and market and investor confidence.

“Inflation may ease as supply-driven inflationary pressures subside and monetary policy tightening is sustained. However, the Nigerian government’s planned expenditure increase to N47.9 trillion in 2025, coupled with the introduction of a new minimum wage, is expected to drive inflation. As a result, the CBN is likely to maintain a tight monetary policy to manage these inflationary pressures,” he explained.

He further highlighted that the planned increase in telecom tariffs and rising electricity prices are expected to contribute to sector-specific inflation.

While improved price stability in petroleum products (PMS) could help mitigate some inflationary pressures, the overall impact on sectors such as telecommunications and energy may still result in higher consumer costs.

“Manufacture In America Or Face Tariffs” – Trump To Global Businesses

United States President, Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to global businesses, urging them to manufacture their products in the United States or face tariffs.

This warning was delivered during his first major speech to global leaders since returning to the White House, where he addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, via remote video conferencing on Thursday.

Trump’s message was clear: “Come make your product in America and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth.”

However, he also made it clear that failure to comply would result in tariffs: “But if you don’t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply you will have to pay a tariff.”

The US President also expressed his belief that lower oil prices could help bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

To achieve this, he plans to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to reduce oil prices.

“If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately,” he said, adding that “Right now, the price is high enough that that war will continue.”

Trump’s speech comes amid reports that the US may impose steep tariffs on major trading partners Canada, Mexico, and China as early as February 1.

The US President has also signed several executive orders, including ones that pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Accords and the World Health Organisation.

Ajaero Faults Power Minister Over Electricity Bands, Migration Plans

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, has claimed that the electricity bands and migration plan is discriminatory.

Speaking on Channels TV’s program on Thursday, Ajaero berated Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, for putting some Nigerians in Band A and others in lower bands.

The NLC President also kicked against service-based tariff which put electricity users in different bands, according to service delivered by distribution companies, calling it the highest form of ‘419’.

He said: “Now the ministry is talking about migrating from Band B To Band A, that is the highest level of 419 one can think of,” Ajaero said on the programme.

“The local parlance 419 has become notorious for the description of fraudulent activities.

“Who is in Band A and who is in Band B? Is it based on geographical area that you have Band A or Band B or is it based on the dictates of the provider?

“In countries of the world that are targeting 24 hours power supply, why would somebody be talking about Band A or Band B? How would it happen?

“So, that idea is concocted to make money unnecessarily and say people are migrated.

“What are the conditions to be on Band A? What are the conditions to be on Band Be? Why would you discriminate?

“Why would you give me Band B and give somebody Band A? So, these are the issues.”

INFORMATION NIGERIA reports that the development is coming, following Adelabu’s statement that 90 per cent of electricity users in Band A have confirmed that they are getting the benefit of being in Band A.

He also said that more customers would be migrated to Band A to enjoy electricity for longer hours.

Power Minister Clarifies N8bn Budget Amidst Controversy

Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, has on Thursday set the record straight on the N8 billion budgeted for the power sector in 2025.

Contrary to reports that the funds would be used for electricity bill sensitization, Adelabu explained that the allocation is specifically meant for advocacy, education, and enlightenment on power assets vandalization and protection.

According to Adelabu, the budget will be used to sensitize Nigerians on the need to “protect power infrastructure,” which has been plagued by vandalism and “sabotage.”

“Far from what is being canvassed, the federal government is deeply worried about acts of sabotage that have continued to erode the gains made in the last one and half year in electricity supply to Nigerians,” he said in a statement by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser to the Minister on Strategic Communications and Media Relations.

The Minister emphasized that the advocacy program would be nationwide, covering all 774 local government areas and 36 states, including Abuja.

The program would utilize various platforms, including “radio, television, social media, newspapers, and billboards, to re-orientate Nigerians on the implications of vandalizing power infrastructure.”

Adelabu also noted that the program would involve engaging community stakeholders, local security personnel, and deploying technology to safeguard power assets.

“This would also involve the engagements of the different community stakeholders across the geo-political zones in town hall meetings; engaging local security men to protect such assets,” he explained.

The Minister’s clarification comes amid reports that the ministry had budgeted N8 billion for sensitization on electricity payment.

However, Adelabu maintained that the Ministry does not need to preach to Nigerians about paying for electricity they consume, as the various distribution companies (DisCos) are capable of recovering debts owed to them.

‘Ensure My Case Is Transferred To Southeast If No Other Abuja FHC Judge Apart From Justice Nyako Wants To Priside Over It’ – Nnamdi Kanu Tells Counsel

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has requested that his case to be transferred to South-East if no judge at the Federal High Court in Abuja is willing to preside over it apart from Justice Binta Nyako.

This was contained in a statement on Wednesday by his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, following a routine meeting with his legal team at the Department of State Services facility in Abuja.

The IPOB leader ordered his lawyers to ensure that Justice Nyako stays off his case following her recusal.

Recall that Kanu had asked the trial Judge to ‘hands off’ his trial on grounds of lack of confidence.

Following the call, Justice Nyako stepped down from Kanu’s case and transferred the case file to Chief Justice of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho.

In his statement, Ejimakor disclosed that the IPOB leader had instructed his legal team to prevent Justice Nyako from presiding over his trial.

He said: “The routine visitation to Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu continues unabated, as the legal team just concluded a crucial visitation today.

“The central issue arising at today’s visitation is the upcoming court date for the continuation of MNK’s case.

“Due to its constitutional implications, Onyendu instructed the legal team to take certain prompt steps to ensure that his case is not handled by the same Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako, who had withdrawn from the case by virtue of the order of recusal entered on 24th September 2024.

“The point was stressed that should the case still lie with Justice Murtala-Nyako, it would mean that the same court is disobeying an order that it made.

“If no other judge in Abuja is willing to handle the case, the Chief Judge is free to transfer the case to Umuahia, Awka, Enugu, Asaba, Port Harcourt, or any other Federal High Court within the former Eastern Nigeria, where the alleged offenses were said to have occurred or had their impact.”

SERAP Gives Tinubu 48-Hour Ultimatum To Reverse 50% Telecom Tariff Hike

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu, demanding that he reverses the recent 50% increase in telecom tariffs within 48 hours.

Failure to comply will result in legal action, SERAP threatened.

According SERAP’s statement on Wednesday, “The Tinubu administration and telcos must immediately reverse the unlawful increase in calls and data costs. We’ll see in court if the 50% tariff hike is not reversed within 48 hours.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had approved the tariff hike on January 20, citing the need to address the gap between operational costs and current tariffs.

The NCC stated that “the adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50 per cent of current tariffs, though lower than the over 100 per cent requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability.”

The NCC also noted that “tariff rates have remained static since 2013, despite the increasing costs of operation faced by telecom operators.” The commission believes that the approved adjustment will support telecom operators in investing in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity.

As disclosed by the NCC, “these adjustments will support the ability of operators to continue investing in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity, including better network quality, enhanced customer service, and greater coverage.”

Nevertheless, the increase has sparked concerns about the potential consequences of the tariff hike on the already struggling Nigerian economy.

“We hope that our governors in the region would collaborate with us to tackle insecurity in the region. They cannot tackle this menace alone. We are closer to the grassroots.”

Coordinator of OPC in Osun State, Adeyemi Aboderin, disclosed: “We have received a standby order from the Aare Ona Kakanfo, Iba Gan Adams to be vigilant and collaborate with the state government to ensure proper security of forest and border towns in the region.
