Nigerian attacked for buying food with redesigned naira banknote
A Nigerian man who frequented a local restaurant was shamed and assaulted by the owner for paying for his meal with the redesigned 1,000 naira note.
a clip of the incident posted on Twitter on Friday showed a woman, the restaurant owner, insisting that the man must pay for his meal with the old naira note.The woman violently grabbed the man’s pants and ripped them, while rejecting the redesigned 1,000 bill that the man was holding.
“Give me my money right away, what kind of crap is this,” the food vendor yelled at the man as she continued to drag him away.
“I’ve never seen this kind of money before, I don’t charge,” the woman said in pidgin English.
“Na dey new note na, what will it be?” the man replied, yelling at the top of his lungs.
Another woman, who apparently reached out to intervene, backed up the food vendor in rejecting the note. “Oga, pay your money,” she told the man.
A small crowd gathered at the scene. The food vendor insisted that the note was fake. He called the man a thief and continued to harass him. The woman and the man spoke intermittently in the Yoruba language.
Although it is not clear where and when the incident occurred, it definitely underscores the lack of knowledge about the redesigned notes that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) began circulating on December 15.
The main bank is phasing out the old 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes.
“There seems to be not enough awareness of the naira exchange on the streets. Cases like this will continue to happen,” Twitter user @ideniyor commented on the clip.
